Currently expecting DS1. I am totally stuck with boys names and keep coming back to James. Is it too dull?

I love James - it's simple, beautiful and timeless. Very popular but not faddy, and I only know two Jameses under five, one baby and one preschooler.

Our newborn DS2 was nearly called James but we ended up going for another classic name which went better with the middle names we'd chosen. Both our sons names are on @TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap 's list!

I've got a James. We chose it because it could take him anywhere in life. And we liked it.

I have a James because I love this song. We sometimes call him Jim too. Don't like Jamie though.

I agree Richard, John and Philip are out of favour at the moment, but names of kings and saints tend to be names that last. John is a fine name and I don't know why it isn't used more. Richard probably suffers because of puerile sniggering about Dick. Philip is a bit of a stretch, I suppose, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has a revival in a few years. Lots of people coming up to the age of having a baby will have a Dad or Grandpa called Philip/Phil.

James is a lovely classic name. I only know of one James of primary age. It seems to be a very popular middle name but quite unusual to hear it as a first name.

I have to disagree, I think a lot of the names you've listed are imo very old fashioned! I can't imagine ever having a boy and calling him Richard, John or Philip!

CuntyMcFuckerson my DS also gets Jimbob as a petname, although I’m only allowed to say it in our house because DS doesn’t want his mates hearing it and calling him JimBob too! Grin

Mine's a teen now. There were no others at his primary and there's only a Jamie at his high school. We're in Scotland so there's supposed to be loads of them about but we don't come across many young/teen ones at all.

There's plenty of nickname options with it too. Though mine has always gone by his full name (except when I call him Jamesina-Belle or Jimbobtastic!).

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap perhaps I didn’t explain myself properly but I What I meant to say was that I couldn’t think of a classic name that both DH and I loved as much as James and that also spanned the generations. I don’t think James ever goes out of fashion or is ever seen as trendy. When I was at school there was one boy called George and he hated his name as it was seen as an old mans name back then whereas now I, and many others, love the name and it’s become fashionable again. I would perhaps say the same for names such as John, Michael, Peter, Phillip, Henry, Charles and possibly others. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I dislike these names but thinking back to my childhood and presently some would be seen as popular in previous generations or a mans name rather than a boy. There’s nothing wrong with any of those names at all, it’s just that for me personally I felt that James was the only boy name I could think of where it was never in or out of fashion. Likewise with Louise for a girl, I don’t think it’ll ever be fashionable or unfashionable if you see what I mean?

James is a great name. I agree that it's not used as often as it used to be. I don't know any little ones at all.

It's a great name ! All the James I know are 20s or older , it's a nice classic name but the bonus of not being as common now !

It's a lovely name, and not actually that popular at the moment I don't think - way more George/ Henry/ Williams at my kids' school and nursery.
