Currently expecting DS1. I am totally stuck with boys names and keep coming back to James. Is it too dull?

James is a great name. Ageless and classless as a pp says, with lots of nicknames.

I read somewhere that James is the only name to be in the top 20 (in England and Wales) throughout the last 100 years.

It really is a lovely name, when you actually look at it and read it over and over it seems like quite an unusual name!

In my area it's still surprisingly ubiquitous with there being 3 in my DSs Reception class, there were also 3 in my class at school. So I would say it is still very common, I think it sort of hangs around just outside the top ten.

But go for it, it's lovely!

Beautiful classic name. Ageless and classless, well-known internationally. I'd think about a nickname - personally I dislike Jamie/Jay so would get in there quickly with Jimmy/Jim.

DH is a James - I mostly call him James, his parents call him Jim or Jimmy, SIL calls him J. He's 29.

And we named DS Luke! DH chose it (I named DD so thought it was fair). We found coming up with boys names so much harder.

It's a lovely name. As others have said, a classic, solid name. Not overly common nor old-fashioned: there is one James in each of my three children's classes.

13 week old DS is a James (sometimes Jamie!). Unexpected as it wasn’t on my list but he popped out and was clearly a James. Gorgeous name.

My 21 year old DS is a James - called him this because it's my maiden name Grin goes by Jimmy or Jim at home (DH calls him Seamus at times too) but he always introduces himself as James - go for it I say Wink

My DS is James, the family always called him Jamie because that was the name I loved but thought he should have James on his birth certificate. He is called James at school and Jay by some friends. He answers to all

I love James and think it is much more of a timeless classic than Luke, Jake or George

Also love Jim/Jimmy but not keen on Jamie

I wouldn't say it has been overused in the past 20 years although obviously isn't unusual either

Ah it’s lovely, and my DBs middle name. Although, you could go for the Gaelic, Seamus? Which considering the other convoluted Gaelic names in my family, I’m surprised my DB got off that lightly tbh Grin

Good strong name. I would always feel reassured being in any difficult situation with a James, Richard or Michael on hand. They sound like good guys to have in your corner. Grin

He's always been a Jim, he was a little old man even when he was a baby! Primary age now.

I wouldn't use it as it's a bit common but if how popular it is isn't something you're concerned about then I think it's a lovely name!

Always liked James.
Interestingly, I was just saying the other day to someone that it was the only name i could think of which is never out of style.

Matthew has tailed off, and there are very few young Johns, Davids, Marks, Philips, Michaels and Christophers these days.

Conversely, Harry, George, Fred etc. may be popular again now, but were 'old man' names a few years ago.
