I'd choose Jakub to honour his Polish heritage & use the diminutive Kuba.

I’ve never heard of Jakub. I’d assume it was a yooneek name that the parents had made up and it would colour my perception. He’ll be correcting people his entire life.

I think calling him jay-cub and having the polish spelling would be the worst of both worlds.

Depends on pronunciation. Jakub would be ya-kub. I actually prefer the Polish . Kuba is a great shortening. Also, Polish names will be pretty common place for this generation so they shouldn’t have too much trouble spelling them out.

Agree with the people saying that whichever you choose should have the pronunciation to match.

Calling him Jakub but pronounced like the English Jacob would be the worst of both worlds.

Mm wisdom is that we are bad parents who have condemned our dc to a life of explaining their name and the spelling of it to people. To us, recognising their dual heritage was more important than denying one half of it so as to fit in with middle England as much as possible.

But it's very useful if, as an adult with a partly foreign but white background, you have to deal with xenophobic people, and they don't know your heritage unless you tell them, because they wouldn't have a clue from your name. (Hopefully you won't have to know them well enough to tell them middle names!)

Off topic OP but I’d LOVE to know how to pronounce Przemyslaw.

I work with a child with this name but he’s always known by a nickname.

My three sons have Polish names that work for English people. Mm wisdom is that we are bad parents who have condemned our dc to a life of explaining their name and the spelling of it to people. To us, recognising their dual heritage was more important than denying one half of it so as to fit in with middle England as much as possible.

I would pronounce them differently. Yakub vs jaycub. Choose the spelling which matches how you pronounce it.

I think Jacob (Jay-cub) sounds far nicer than Jakub (Ya-cub or Ja-cub)

I teach a Jakub (ya-cb) and I don't think anyone has struggled too much with pronunciation. They may need correcting a couple of times but it isn't a difficult name to remember. I think it's really nice and honours the Polish heritage.
Saying that, Jacob is lovely too, so you can't really go wrong, OP! Smile

Jacob, mainly because the other one will sentence your child to a lifetime of correcting people and having to spell out their name for people/employers/banks etc
