Do I go with the safe or contentious name?

A few weeks ago I posted about the name Tabitha. It’s my favourite but the response on MN was mixed and the reaction from my nearest and dearest even worse.

My OH and I had originally picked the name Ivy before we thought of Tabitha, but we’re worried that it’s too common and similar to your Ava’s and Evie’s etc

So my question is do I go with the name that is a bit more unusual but often disliked, or the one that is more liked but also more used? We love both but we are struggling to settle!

Tabitha Jane/Tabitha Rose

Or

Ivy Elizabeth?

Tabitha.
Either Jane or Rose suits it.

Elmo303 · 07/09/2018 22:22

100 per cent Tabitha!

MollyHuaCha · 07/09/2018 22:16

Tabitha Rose - I wanted this name too! But DH said no...

Please choose it.

RedDwarves · 07/09/2018 21:45

I don't think Tabitha is contentious at all, and Ivy has only recently been widely used.

I like both, but would be inclined to go with Tabitha as Ivy is very popular at the moment.

Love Tabitha but do also like Ivy...
go with Tabitha if you love it. Its a marmite name so remember for every person you hear slate it another will absolutely love it!

Treaclepie19 · 07/09/2018 21:41

I love Tabitha.

Harleypuppy · 07/09/2018 21:38

Tabitha Rose.

RavenWings · 07/09/2018 21:36

Although to come back to this I think Tabea is gorgeous. German form of Tabitha afaik.

SequinsOnEverything · 07/09/2018 21:36

Tabitha

alpaca44 · 07/09/2018 21:34

Tabitha much nicer than Ivy. I think of Ivy as the nuisance plant I can’t get rid of in the garden!

Oliversmumsarmy · 07/09/2018 21:33

Definitely Tabitha. I am of an age when Ivy was the name of hard old women, usually very thin and who smoked 60 per day. Can picture one now.

daisypond · 07/09/2018 21:32

Tabitha is much nicer than Ivy.

ZebraKid71 · 07/09/2018 21:27

Tabitha by a million miles. I think ivy will date, I know lots and there are either elderly or under 5.

Tabitha with ivy as a middle name is lovely.

Mum2jenny · 07/09/2018 21:26

Love Tabitha Rose, not keen on Ivy

LilQueenie · 07/09/2018 21:26

I really like Tabitha Rose. It always reminds me of the little girl in Bewitched.

Awrite · 07/09/2018 21:23

its

Tabitha is a cracking name.

To me, Ivy is Ivy Brennan. I cannot understand it's popularity.

helpmum2003 · 07/09/2018 21:21

I agree don't consult your family - it's your decision.

Both pretty names - personally I love Tabitha!

Pressuredrip · 07/09/2018 21:18

Tabitha is one of my top 5 favourites, and certainly isn't uncommon these days.

InezGraves · 07/09/2018 21:16

Both names are nice, but if you like Tabitha, it’s far from unusual. Also, what on earth does your mother have to do with what you name your baby?

TaggieRR · 07/09/2018 21:16

I much prefer Tabitha to Ivy

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 07/09/2018 21:14

Tabitha Rose is beautiful. If you and DH love it you should go with it. She will be your DD, and that's all that matters

Justkeeprollingalong · 07/09/2018 21:12

Wait until she is born, neither might be her name, you'll know when you see her!

villainousbroodmare · 07/09/2018 21:07

I much prefer Tabitha.

butlerswharf · 07/09/2018 21:04

First rule of naming a child is not to tell anyone or ask family opinions before you've 100% decided.

Second rule is to ignore everyone else's opinions and just choose the name you love the most.
