Pronouncing Aaron

I’m in the UK, in the suburban South, for reference.

How would you pronounce Aaron? Is it AH-run, or AIR-run?

I’m not bias in either direction, just interested to know. I like the name.

Air-un - Londoner here. Never heard Ah-run! Arr-un, with a short 'a' yes (which I'm not keen on) but never Ah-run with a long 'ah'.

I think they're pretty similar in some Scottish accents as well, aren't they?

Sunflower- yeah Erin and Aaron are two different pronunciations, I agree with you. What I'm saying is in my accent Erin and Aaron pronounced as Air-ron sound exactly the same. Other accents obviously vary.

To me

Erin is Er-in

and

Aaron is Aah-ron

Very different pronunciations.

No it isn't. It's not a British name and pronunciations seem to vary a lot from area to area and country to country.

Both Aarons I knew were ah runs - one Scottish of Polish parentage, one Welsh.

Smiling at those saying they pronounce it the same as it they do in the Bible... how can you know??

Air-ron does not sound like Erin. At all.

My sister's name is Erin and we call her Air-ron, or actually probably more like Air-rn. Her mostly Essex-dwelling friends however call her Errin, exactly like herring but without the H or G.

If our baby is a boy we are going with Aaron! (Ah-ron)We were toying with Arran but we live 20 miles or so from the isle of Arran and thought it may have been a bit cringey

Well in my accent they sound exactly the same. I'm from Northern Ireland.

I went to school with few, only ever Ah-Run. I thought Air-On was a mn thing because I've only seen it on here.

I would pronounce it Ah-run and i'm in the SE. I've known an Arran and an Aaron and pronounced them both the same.

So boringly typical of the yups on mumsnet to announce that they are right!!

Its already been established that there are several pronounciations.

It’s OK to give an opinion without trying to force everyone to your particular way of thinking. It’s offputting!

I would like to hear from some Jewish Mumsnetters on this thread-surely you don't talk about the Prophet Arran?

The question is, does it really matter? Many many foreign names are used in the UK, and most are pronounced differently to how they are in their language of origin.

Air and error have the same sound in my accent.

Air-ron does not sound like Erin. At all. The 'air' is a long sound, like the word air. Erin starts with a short sound like the word error. Plus, of course, they have different vowels in the second syllable. I really don't think anyone would get them confused.

I know an Aaron here in Australia who pronounces it Arrun, or Azz (love the Aussies!) I've got the hang of it now - I kept trying to pronounce it the way I'm used to (Air-un) but I'm there now.
