Full name for Libby?

We’re set on calling dd Libby - dp and I just can’t agree on what it should be short for.

He likes Elisabeth, I prefer Liberty.

We’ve also considered Olivia (but it’s so popular at the moment), and we both really like Lydia (but it seems like Lydie would be a more obvious nn)

Any thoughts?

Libby is short for Elizabeth.

Liberty works too, but Liberty is a pretty dire "name".

It is not a shortening for Olivia (that is Liv/Livvy), or Lydia.

Elizabeth often becomes Lizzy or Beth. Lovely names.

Liberty or Libertine would naturally shorten to Libby. I'm not so keen on these.

I was known as the 'cuter' shortened version of my name for the first 18 years of my life, then took a dislike to it and have been known as the full name ever since.
I think it's nice to have the option.

I love the name Elisabeth, precisely because it's got so many short variations for the owner to chose from.

My cousin called her dd Libby. Just Libby. Some of the family gutted!

I'd personally just use Libby, I'm not fussed on 'formal names'

I'd prefer Elizabeth to Liberty though, of the 2. Elizabeth sounds classier , Liberty is not my cup of tea at all .

I know at least two Libby's with no longer name.

I think that these days if you like the name - use it. It doesn't need to be a nickname for something else.

Elizabeth is the traditional long name. Liberty is a bit burlesque dancer to me! Grin

Love the name Liberty... Unfortunately George Osbourne named his daughter that which has sadly put me off Sad

That aside, either is good. Elizabeth has the option of lots of other nicknames if she wants them which could be an advantage or disadvantage depending on your pov.

I'd assume Liberty. Elizabeth is Lizzy not Libby in my head! Or Lilibet if you want to be like the Queen.

Beth is my favourite short name for Elizabeth. Not so keen on Libby however you are the mum so don’t take any notice of me.

I love Liberty! Like Elizabeth too.

Not keen on Libby on its own for some reason... don’t know why, as I do like some traditional shortenings as full names. Just not Libby.

Elizabeth is lovely, and I know several who shorten it to Libby, which is really lovely. Liberty is much less classic and tbh I really don’t like it.

If I heard Libby I would assume the full name to be Liberty, it's a lovely name

Elizabeth is the assumed long name and is so much nicer than Liberty.

I have known two girls who go by the name Libby. They were both registered as Elizabeth.
I went to the wedding of one. The registrar said she had to use her 'proper' name, not Libby.
