Predictions for 2017's top names

Lallypopstick · 01/09/2018 20:19

The ONS usually publishes data on the top baby names of the last year around this time (last year the data was published 20th September and the year before it was 2nd September).

Any predictions about what might top the chart or be the new climbers? I think Theo might break the top 20 (29th last year) and Arlo won't be far behind (49 last year). And maybe an increase in Meghans because of Meghan Markle (apparently only 881st last year). I was also wondering about Ariana after the Manchester bombings and One Love concert.

Any others?

If Ava or Evie isn’t in the top 10 I’ll eat my tights

(I don’t wear a hat)

SleepFreeZone · 13/09/2018 22:20

Isabel/Isabella must be top 10. I know so many!!!

LarkDescending · 13/09/2018 22:18

Sorry, I should have said Ruby was 4th in 2006 and 26th in 2016 so it had fallen that distance over the course of a decade.

LarkDescending · 13/09/2018 22:15

Surely Ruby is in the way down? It was one of the big fallers in 2016, from 4th to 26th.

LarkDescending · 13/09/2018 22:06

I’d think Alice will stay high or go higher, and further down the charts Constance, Eliza, Ida & Margot will gain ground.

For boys I would expect Sebastian, Victor, Vincent and Wilfred to be on the rise.

RoseAdagio · 13/09/2018 21:37

Mia and Sebastian to both rise, due to the La La Land effect.

V keen to find out how many people used my daughter’s name last year. In 2016, only 44 babies got given her name (Larissa). There were more Khaleesis than Larissas! Hoping it stays rare....

Shadow1234 · 13/09/2018 21:22

Ruby and Ivy seem to be popping up a lot in my area.

Could possibly make it to the list!

Lallypopstick · 13/09/2018 20:48

I think nature names will be on the rise as well.

I have an 11 year old Theo and not come across many others, in a 600 pupil primary he was the only one. I also have a felix and thought this would be the much less popular name but there he's one of three at the same school and we come across loads out and about. So, from my perspective def think felix is on the rise!

Blondie87 · 02/09/2018 18:08

Oh and Evelyn/Evie

Blondie87 · 02/09/2018 18:07

Girls' names I'm hearing a lot are:
Florence
Lily
Ava
Ivy

Boys:
Oscar
Theo
Isaac
Ezra
Jack

Crunchymum · 02/09/2018 14:48

I expect both my DD names to have risen, both were out of the top 100 the year they were born but have risen.

DS has a top 10 name though.

TatianaLarina · 02/09/2018 09:19

Olivia, Ava/Eva/Evie, Ella/Ellie, Lily/Lila, Sophie/a, Grace, Isla, Mia, Amelia/ Amelie will retain popularity.

Rising are Iris, Margot, Imogen, Phoebe, Violet, Beatrice, Harper, Edie, Sienna, Savannah.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/09/2018 09:16

Agree that Isla seems to be incredibly popular. Can’t remember the last time I went anywhere there were children and didn’t hear it! Seems to be more toddlers though.

Maireadd · 02/09/2018 09:15

Violet, Iris, Luna, Margot, Hazel, Sylvie all up.

Ditto Albert/Bertie, Frederick/Freddie/Fred, Ezra, Robin, Bodhi and Eric (I know 3 baby Erics!)

And my kids’ names will both be up again too 😭

harrietm87 · 02/09/2018 09:00

Arlo, Ezra, Idris rising for boys

Isla and Freya for girls

raviolidreaming · 02/09/2018 08:06

Aria and Isla to rise. I think Amelia might be starting to fall now

Theo and Freddie going up, and Oliver at the top for boys.

Lallypopstick · 02/09/2018 08:06

Interesting about Harvey Kwan42 wonder if there are any other names that have fallen from grace? Isis is the most obvious one.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/09/2018 07:12

Florence to be in the top 20. Aria and Harper to rise.

Teddy to rise-probably Theodore and Theo too. Ezra and Arlo will have risen too. And Jasper.

crisscrosscranky · 02/09/2018 06:32

I'm predicting Harriet, Rosie, Aria and Emily to be up.

IggyAce · 02/09/2018 05:49

Amelia, Olivia, Jack and Oliver will still be in the top 5. Rising names will be Theo, Thea and Evelyn.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Barbara, Rebecca, and Paul rising too.

Kwan42 · 02/09/2018 05:35

I loved the name Harvey before the whole Harvey Weinstein incident...
for a girl I like Katerina as it has a sophisticated vibe to it
