People making me question names

I had chosen a name for my baby girl....Ellci which is a different spelling to Elsie... but everyone keeps pronouncing it as elki? And saying that if I chose that name she would always have people getting it wrong and spelling it wrong. Making me now question wether I've chosen the right name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hmm Where did you get this mythical baby name book?

Liahere · 31/08/2018 19:58

Oh my God.....so this is online bullying? I have always thought that these sites we're for mum's to chat and help each other. I'm disappointed that instead it's a place for people to call names and belittle.
It seems that calling someone a moron and dim is a grown up response to something you don't like? Really? What gives you all the right to put anyone down. Your opinion? It stinks. You sit at home with nothing better to do. The word coward comes to mind.... Easy to bully someone from behind a screen.

gigi556 · 31/08/2018 19:51

I read it EL-CHEE. Agree with all previous posts. It's awful. Elsie is lovely though. What does your other half think?

NonaGrey · 31/08/2018 19:49

Sorry don’t know why the double posting!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 31/08/2018 19:48

There seem to be several companies called Ellci... Are you sure it wasn’t the phone book you were looking in?

NonaGrey · 31/08/2018 19:46

I would pronounce that el-chi given the spelling.

ELLCI is an Italian language school.

I’m not a fan of made up spellings personally, but she’s your child you can call her what you like.

Your friends are right though , she is going to have pronunciation problems throughout her life with that spelling.

noitsachicken · 31/08/2018 19:45

It can’t be in any books!
No babies named that between 2006-2016!

UghNoWay · 31/08/2018 19:40

I don’t like the spelling Ellci unless it’s a spelling from another culture. It doesn’t look like Elsie, it reminds me of a Company name.

Have you actually named you child this or are you just toying with the name?

ReginaPhalange89 · 31/08/2018 19:39

Please don't use that spelling . Did you make that up? Elsie is a lovely name, don't ruin it !

I don't understand why people make up their own spellings. It doesn't make it 'unique' or cool. In fact the opposite. It's quite cringey , in my opinion of course. A

Izzyw1983 · 31/08/2018 19:37

There are many people called Ellci ...so no not something I made up...it's in the baby name book...but to be honest no need for the nasty comments...I won't ask for anything again

Not only will people spell it wrong, op, but they’ll think she’s thick when she gives them the “right” version.
Because that’s not only wrong, it’s ridiculous.
Like trying to make the name Elsie on a scrabble board but not having quite the right tiles.

I agree with everyone else, unfortunately. I would pronounce that Ell-chi not Elsie. DD has a name that originates from where DH was born/grew up but people where we live seem to struggle with the pronunciation. We've not changed the spelling (I can't stand it when people try to be 'unique'), it's just not a local name. I love her name but have sometimes thought it might have been easier to call her Mary!!

Elsie is a lovely name on its own. I'd leave it like that.

Knittedfairies · 31/08/2018 19:35

People are not questioning the name, just your spelling.

BlueSky198080 · 31/08/2018 19:34

Ell-key. Only way to pronounce it. Don’t be silly

BlueUggs · 31/08/2018 19:34

Why would you do that?! Elsie is such a pretty name. It looks ridiculous how you have spelt it and your poor child is going to spend the rest of her life until she changes it by deedpoll anyway correcting the pronunciation and spelling.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 31/08/2018 19:33

I recognised it as El-see
However I can understand people
mis prouncing it. I'm afraid being realistic she probably will go through life having to correct people. There is nothing wrong with unique sellings providing it causes no confusion. How about Ellsee

BigBairyHollocks · 31/08/2018 19:32

More-on😂unnecessary but also hilarious.Sorry OP.I also pronounced that Ell-key

HeronLanyon · 31/08/2018 19:31

I think I would pronounce it EllChee and assume she was perhaps Italian/Croatian oh thinking of Elche in Spain. I don’t think she will thank you for a life of having to spell it and pronounce it every time she (and indeed you !) uses it. Once explained I would then think her parent/s had been desperate to be ‘different’ and had lost their good sense momentarily.

Livinglavidal0ca · 31/08/2018 19:31

I read it as elky

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 31/08/2018 19:31

I’d pronounce that spelling as ‘Ell-ki’ (and assume it was a boys name). If I knew it was a girls name, then I’d guess the pronunciation as ‘Ell-chi’ (and wonder why you’d chosen a name that sounded so much like Squelchy).

If you want your daughter to be called Elsie, then spell it Elsie.

Airaforce · 31/08/2018 19:30

You can change the spelling of the name on the birth certificate for no extra cost before she is one. Change the spelling asap. You're not doing her any favours at all for when she grows up.

Good of you to point out that Ellci is spelled differently to Elsie. We’d never have worked that out...
You’re having a laugh, aren’t you? Nobody is this dim.
