People making me question names

I had chosen a name for my baby girl....Ellci which is a different spelling to Elsie... but everyone keeps pronouncing it as elki? And saying that if I chose that name she would always have people getting it wrong and spelling it wrong. Making me now question wether I've chosen the right name.

Haha in cognito? Not that I need to explain myself especially as you have said there are no filters on this site I also have the right to say what I think. Name calling and put downs is not a discussion. People have a right to dislike a name but the terrible things that have been said....not about the name but her personally is out of order I'm sure you will agree.

Yes, of course it's her choice, but one of the consequences of that choice is that no one knows how to pronounce it (Incouid see 3 ways).

I knew I wouid not have the patience or good will to be forever telling people which way of a multi-way name was the preferred one, and so did not choose one. OP did, and needs to realise that she can't escape the inevitable consequences of that choice.

And yes, some posters have been considerably blunter than I wouid be, even though it's a spelling I dislike considerably, the whole point of baby name threads on MN is that you get opinions unfiltered by ordinary polite manners. Because if I met Ellci, I would be saying 'Elsie's a lovely name' without adding any comment about the spelling.

She’s asked for opinions on a name she’s going to name a baby. And actual, human baby. The name is fine, the spelling is awful. It doesn’t make sense, it has very negative connotations (chavvy, uneducated) and will give the child a lifetime of embarrassment/correcting people.

Why would anonymous internet strangers be polite about an awful, awful name?

I'm sure there a hundreds of awful names but if someone chooses a name you don't like why do people start with name calling etc? I was brought up to believe that if people have nothing nice to say Say nothing. I'm totally gobsmacked at the terrible things/names this young woman has been called.
Her baby.....her choice !!!!

I think Elsie looks much nicer spelt the correct way anyway. If you wanted to be a bit different why not give her a funky Middle name?

Elsie is a lovely name, there is no reason to mess about with the spelling!

OP The problem is that the alphabet and letter sounds aren't the same. The letter "c" is pronounced "see" but the letter sound isn't, its more like "kuh". Hence people pronouncing it correctly like that.

Some baby name books have some seriously dubious names in that I’m pretty sure the authors made up for a laugh.

I remember the baby name book I bought when I was expecting DC1, it was called something along the lines of “Thousands of Baby Names”.
The 1000s of baby names included gems like Chubby and Spunky, and other similar names that I can’t believe any parent would put on a birth certificate. They’d also bulked up the name count with plenty of creative spellings (such as Ellci as an alternative spelling of Elsie).

Baby name books are not always trustworthy.

Why spell it like that?
It's not the name that's the problem- it's the spelling.
If you love the name then why not spell it properly?
She'll forever be saying 'no it's not E.l.s.i.e'
Frankly it looks dreadful and just because it's supposedly in a baby book, doesn't make it a good idea. You can get all sorts of horrid names in books!

Ellsi might be easier regarding pronunciation if you want to keep with a different kind of spelling.

I’d pronounce Elcie (and possibly Ellcie) as ‘Elsie’ but not Ellci. She’s definitely going to be spelling that out and correcting the pronunciation. Constantly.

You’ve chosen a perfectly fine and lovely name: Elsie. It’s a great choice.

Ellci: no. Why muck about with the spelling? It will only make things more complicated for her down the line.

Although, Ellcie seems to be the name of lots of brands... Lovely name, but maybe stick to the traditional spelling.

Having a Google, turns up Ellcie, which seems better (and feels less likely to be pronounced Elkey). Elsie is a nice name.
