Naming son after father

Would you?

I love DH’s name. I also have 2/3 other names I love so probably wouldn’t do it in the end, but interested to hear your thoughts. I know of maybe 3 people who’ve done it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I would do it as a middle name, I think that's nice.

Both my mum and uncle are named after their parents (old and small John and Mary) and their baby sister was the only one to get an original name. When I was born they tried to pressure my mum into calling me Mary as well to "keep up the tradition" but luckily for me my mother rebelled as she hated not having her own identity and didn't want me to be like that.

Loads of Irish families have the same name in several generations. It does not appear to present unsurmountable difficulties.......Grin

eeanne · 30/08/2018 07:55

DH's family does this, drives me crazy. If you call out Michael at a family event about 6 people turn around.

Men do typically do it but I know a woman named Anne and her daughter is Anna.

Also there's the interesting twist Serena Williams did, they named the daughter Alexis Jr after the father! But they call her by her middle name so shows it's too damn confusing.

Sunflower321 · 30/08/2018 07:45

Names are given to identify someone. Not really happening if you give two members of the family the same name! Unimaginative too!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2018 04:33

Almost no women name their children after themselves. It seems so egotistical and unnecessary.

IceBearRocks · 30/08/2018 04:30

In DH sure there is a family name that has been around in the first male since 1830's ..it DH first Name and our sons middle name!
We hope our family can continue the name .

KennDodd · 30/08/2018 04:25

I think catinboots9 has summed it up perfectly.

Dated, narcissistic and weird.

I'd be cringing for you if you did this.

woodfires · 30/08/2018 04:24

I did, I offered to when I was high on morphine post birth, DH wouldn't let me change my mind afterwards. We call DS by his middle name, the one I always wanted him to have. I forget for months at a time he actually has the same name as his dad.

Sophronia · 30/08/2018 04:04

My brother, dad and grandad have the same name.

SwordToFlamethrower · 30/08/2018 00:37

No way. Like Donald Trump Jnr perhaps? Please, we're British and British men aren't so stuck up and egotistical as to name their sons after themselves. Middle name maybe?

Sakura7 · 30/08/2018 00:22

It's not for me. I think a child should have his or her own identity. It does strike me as a bit narcissistic too.

You could always use it as a middle name.

redastherose · 30/08/2018 00:21

No it's weird. My dad was friendly with a guy from work when I was a child and him and his wife had called each of their son and daughter by their names 😳

moredoll · 30/08/2018 00:14

I have my mother's name. Growing up I always always wanted my own name. Use your husband's name as a middle name.

notacooldad · 30/08/2018 00:00

It's bad enough when they have the same initial for there first name when they are old enough to get their own mail.
Unfortunately for us all for of us have the same first initial for our first name. We never thought about future problems with letters from the bank when they were born!

katmarie · 29/08/2018 23:47

My dh and ds have the same middle name, as do my dad and brother. My parents broke a multi generational tradition of naming the son after the father, seven generations of the same male name made it really tricky tracing the family tree!

Charmainedelorosa · 29/08/2018 23:44

I think naming children after their parents is Boring, give the kid it’s own name.

redcaryellowcar · 29/08/2018 23:41

Imagine how embarrassing it'll be when your son has to go to the std clinic and the letter arrives addressed to him/ his Dad? I think I'd play safe and use it as a middle name.

OctaviaOctober · 29/08/2018 23:41

I was at school with a Someone-Junior. He'll get jokes at school that his mother screams his name when she's having sex...

LunaAzul · 29/08/2018 23:37

Please don’t. I’ve spent the past few days with my DH and his dad both with the same name and it’s just confusing. There’s thousands of names out there, use DH’s name as a middle name if you must use it.

MrsA9899 · 29/08/2018 23:35

Totally agree with P.P. - my hubby has his dads name and it gets so confusing. Plus the fact his name is so dated. My FiL actually wanted us to call our son after him and my hubby too and I completely put my foot down. He wasn't pleased. Give him his own identity. And use the name as a middle name, as others have suggested 😊

tiggykate · 29/08/2018 23:32

I’m not a fan of this. Particularly when the child has his fathers surname. People don’t name girls after their mother so why do it for boys? I think a baby deserves his own identity - just my personal opinion.

catinboots9 · 29/08/2018 23:30

Dated, narcissistic and weird.

Go for something similar instead. Or a middle name.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/08/2018 23:29

No way.

By all means love your DP's name - as his name.

Your DS will not be your DP, a mini-DP, or an extension of your DP's identity / identification by you. He will be his own person - possibly a very different, potentially clashing, personality.

Longdistance · 29/08/2018 23:29

My dB has the same names as my df. He hates it as the post comes, and no one knows who it’s for 🤷🏼‍♀️ Very confusing. Not the greatest of ideas.

Itchytights · 29/08/2018 23:28

Too much like big x and little x.
Ridiculous imo.
