Ko-bee would be Kobi in Japanese

rainingcatsanddog · 30/08/2018 12:29

Kobe is pronounced Ko-bay in Japan. (The y isn't strong so it's more Ko-beh)

ApolloandDaphne · 30/08/2018 12:21

I worked with someone whose DS was called Kobe. It isn't a name i love but it didn't raise my eyebrows and her family have no Asian heritage at all.

rainingcatsanddogs i don't know where you live but it would certainly be pronounced Ko-bay in Scotland.

I think it would work with traditional name like Matthew, Edward, James etc.

ifigoup · 30/08/2018 12:18

People are so narrow-minded on MN.

How about

Kobe William
Kobe Lucas
Kobe Lawrence
Kobe Donovan
Kobe Andrew
Kobe Craig
Kobe Christian

Ashi Marew

rainingcatsanddog · 30/08/2018 12:17

Problem with Kobe is that people will say Ko-bee rather than Ko-bay in the UK.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2018 12:16

Ah sorry just saw y.ou wanted a British middle name. Kobe... Alexander?

cheeseoverchocolate · 30/08/2018 12:13

I had a Japanese friend called Shozo although I hear it's a bit of an old name in Japan. I quite like two sets of two syllables.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/08/2018 12:09

Christopher comes to mind.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/08/2018 12:08

I guess it depends where you live. But yes, I think that most people will think 'place in Japan' as its not a name that many will have come across very much. I thought it was an African name (possibly getting muddled with Kofi).

Try to get something that 'fits' with the length and sound of the surname too.

GinIsIn · 30/08/2018 12:07

If it’s a short surname then something with 2 or 3 syllables would be good.

Winston?

Reaa · 30/08/2018 12:04

Kobe Jax

imsorryiasked · 30/08/2018 12:03

I live the name Kobe and there is one in DS's class. No more "odd" than any other in the class.
Are there any middle names on a short list OP that we could expand on?

backstreetboysareback · 30/08/2018 12:00

@AsAProfessionalFekko no grandpa passed away 3 years ago.

OP posts:
AsAProfessionalFekko · 30/08/2018 11:57

Is the grandpa still alive? Is it culturally OK to name a child after a living relative? I only ask as we almost did this and grandpa said 'I'm not dead yet!' (culturally it is a nono where he is from).

backstreetboysareback · 30/08/2018 11:39

Thanks guys. I'm completely split on going modern or traditional. We already have 2dc with traditional British names so this will be the curveball anyway. It's hard to find something to go.
Our surname is only one syllable if that helps.

GinIsIn · 30/08/2018 11:29

Seriously if you like it, go for it! My friends’ son Kobe gets told his name is awesome all the time. (Although that might be because people know he was named for the basketball player)

How many syllables does your last name have?

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2018 11:24

I think it's a great name OP and it has meaning which your child will come to know and take pride in. Did you have any ideas at all? Do you want something traditional or more modern?

It has meaning in dh's family and we both love the idea of naming him after grandpa but I don't know how I feel after seeing all of the jokes on here. I am British so was hoping for a British middle name but maybe that just won't go.

Ontopofthesunset · 30/08/2018 10:34

But, sorry anyway, if the baby's grandpa is called that I'm obviously wrong - I just have never met any Japanese people called Kobe. But there are millions of Japanese people I haven't met. Anyway, apologies again.
