DH set on girls name - no discussion

Confuseddotcom01 · 29/08/2018 16:33

I thought I was initially expecting a boy - just a feeling - so had a few names in mind after first scan showed that everything looked ok. DH didn’t like my favourite boys name but we agreed on either Matthew or Aaron. He wasn’t that keen on Matthew either but was happy for me to choose if it was a boy.

We subsequently found out that we are having a girl. He liked the name Anna which I agreed was nice and could be added to our list. He now refers to bump as Anna and won’t even consider any other girls names. He says that we agreed on the name but I only recall agreeing to it being on the shortlist.

I feel like it is such a huge decision and we haven’t considered all options.

So just wanted to see what you guys think of Anna?

Anna is much nicer than Emma or Grace. Anna Grace has a nice ring to it though

KnotsInMay · 09/09/2018 10:22

The whole discussion sounds odd. He didn’t really love the boys names you wanted, but didn’t seem to care, but he is being insistent on a girl’s name?

How do other discussions and joint decisions get handled? Do you usually make them together?

I like Anna, but it’s your baby, not mine.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 09/09/2018 10:15

Anna is gorgeous. Don't veto it just because DH has decided that's the name. That would be cutting your nose off to spite your face.

I prefer Anna to Emma and Grace.

Alicatz66 · 09/09/2018 09:29

Anna is a versatile name !!! My daughter is Anna Bandana ... Anna Banana .. all sorts !!!

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 17:27

I think it should be a compromise. You have to both
Like the name and meet somewhere in the middle.

Maybe have anna as a middle name.

MollysMummy2010 · 05/09/2018 22:03

I am not graceful! We had Lara picked as a name but when she wa ms born even the midwife said she didn’t look like a Lara!

Alicatz66 · 03/09/2018 21:42

I'm biased as my daughter is Anna !! .. it's a great name ! There aren't too many and it's classy ... my dad chose my name too ! Why not ...

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/09/2018 20:03

I like Anna but it seems incredibly popular at the minute. Emma is lovely. Irrespective, it needs to be a joint decision.

Sarahandduck18 · 03/09/2018 19:48

Depends how it’s pronounced

I don’t like Ahrnah.

bubblybrit · 03/09/2018 19:38

@Hadehahaha. I didn’t realise that! Not too fussed on the meaning of names (unless they have bad connotations) but I’ll definitely mention to DH! Thanks for flagging as would never have known otherwise 😂

Hadehahaha · 03/09/2018 19:31

Just thought it might be worth mentioning that the name ‘Anna’ means grace in Hebrew...so if you use Anna grace both names will have the same root meaning. Which you may or may not like!

I love Anna but why don’t you ask him to stop calling the bump it and agree to decide when she is here from your shortlist.

bubblybrit · 03/09/2018 19:25

Thanks to all others that have replied! We do still have time to decide. We are just super organised and wanted another tick off our list. Although I don’t think that this is something that you can decide overnight!

bubblybrit · 03/09/2018 19:23

I agree that it is mainly excitement @Rebecca36. First time Daddy and I think he just got carried away!

bubblybrit · 03/09/2018 19:22

Yes I think you are right @notangelinajolie. He can’t see our daughter being called anything else as loves the name so much whilst I am still on the fence even with my own suggestions!

Rosemary46 · 03/09/2018 02:51

If you compromise on the first name, make sure it’s your family name as the middle name and your surname .

Or if it’s his surname, it’s only fair that you get to choose the first and middle name.

Rebecca36 · 03/09/2018 02:46

I think Anna is a lovely name but if you are not sure, why not wait until your daughter is born and discuss it then? You could always incorporate Anna, eg a second name, if you prefer something else for a first.

Husband shouldn't be insisting but it may be because he is excited and feels as though he knows her already! Better than calling her, "Bump"!

notangelinajolie · 03/09/2018 02:32

** sounds like he loves this name more than you love the names you have picked.

notangelinajolie · 03/09/2018 02:30

Aw give him Anna. You can pick the next one Smile

He has picked this name for his little girl and it sounds like he loves this name more than the names you have picked.

Congratulations to you both.

PS it is a really lovely name.

Pawpatrolsucks · 03/09/2018 01:49

I think all the names are lovely, Anna Grace goes well together.
If you can't agree each write a list of names, toss and the loser picks a name off the winners list. Though if you can't agree mum gets the last say. Maybe let him pick the last name.

MiamiLogic · 03/09/2018 01:43

@MollysMummy2010 Same here!

For what it’s worth, I like my name. Hannah was the fad name when I was small so it was nice to be a bit different but not too outlandish. I can count the number of Emmas I know into double digits.

But yes, this is a joint decision!

MollysMummy2010 · 30/08/2018 18:51

Oi!! Stop with the Anna bashing!! Guess what my name is....

fattyboomboomboom · 30/08/2018 18:07

OP - I love Anna and Emma but for me I don't like a grrrr in a name Wink so Grace, although beautiful not my cup of tea.

However!! You are growing this baby and will have to squeeze it out, you get veto powers over DH.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/08/2018 18:00

Is DH 'getting' the last name? Probably. So why does he feel he gets to choose the first name too?

DH (I don't use his name) got to have DD's last name as his. I got her first name.

MajesticWhine · 30/08/2018 17:56

There is loads of time to decide. And I agree the woman should have the final say. I would be tempted to tell him you are going off the name because of his attitude.

OutPinked · 30/08/2018 17:56

I don’t like it. I think it’s possibly clouded by the fact every Anna I have ever met has been an absolute bitch though!

My DP was the same and tried to push Geoffrey on me (after his Dad) I pointblank refused and we found another name we both like. You have to both agree or it doesn’t happen.
