Our daughter is 5 weeks old and we need to register her this week. We called her Alice and whilst I like it, I still have doubts...

Her siblings are Elizabeth (sometimes nn Eliza) and Edward. Sometimes I question the following:

  • Are Elizabeth/Eliza and Alice too similar, so sound odd together?
  • Is Alice mega popular, so will soon become common/overused/dated? Do you know many Alices?
  • There are not many nicknames (unlike her siblings names). It would be nice to have options (Allie is ok, but not great).

Another contender was Alexandra. It is beautiful and strong (maybe a bit too masculine though), goes well with siblings. I like it's full version, it has lots of nickname options (although I don't like any of the shortening really).

Could you share your views on my doubts about Alice?
Also, would Alexandra be a better option?

Thanks in advance!

Alice is lovely.

How about Alexandria if you want something a litttle more feminine. Gives you Allie, Lex / Lexi, Xan / Zan, Dria and the obvious Alex as nickname options.

Here’s my experience of being cslkef Alice for several decades -
It’s rarely abbreviated, and then to Ali. I’ve had lots of nicknames, but not really anything that has stuck based on my first name.

I was good friends with an Elisabeth at school, and have worked with one. Our names have/were never confused.

It’s is sometimes confused for Alex.

I like that it is known, spellable, but not that common. Not amongst my peers or those of my children (9, 6) at least.

Alice is lovely. Alexandra is too but it will get shortened. Probably to the version you like least.

I prefer Alice to Alexandra, personally. I know lots of Alexandras, not so many Alices.

It’s lovely, and classic rather than trendy. Goes really well with the sibling names. I’d stick with it!

FWIW I only know one little Alice, plus two in their 20s.

Not a fan of Alice, much prefer Alexandra - better nicknames, sounds less frilly

I think it goes perfectly with Elizabeth and Edward . It's a lovely name., Yes maybe a little bit more common recently but it's a classic name so I wouldn't let that put you off . Alexandra is also a beautiful name . Eliza and Alex is lovely .

I think they're both equally as nice though, it's hard to pick out of the two !

Other names that are similar - Alyssa? Elise?

Alice was the 17th most popular name in 2016 so it is imo popular. I know a few but personally I'm nit a fan so for that reason I'd go for Alexandra. Either way I think all your names 'go' together - they're very royal!
