Still have doubts, please advise!

Our daughter is 5 weeks old and we need to register her this week. We called her Alice and whilst I like it, I still have doubts...

Her siblings are Elizabeth (sometimes nn Eliza) and Edward. Sometimes I question the following:

  • Are Elizabeth/Eliza and Alice too similar, so sound odd together?
  • Is Alice mega popular, so will soon become common/overused/dated? Do you know many Alices?
  • There are not many nicknames (unlike her siblings names). It would be nice to have options (Allie is ok, but not great).

Another contender was Alexandra. It is beautiful and strong (maybe a bit too masculine though), goes well with siblings. I like it's full version, it has lots of nickname options (although I don't like any of the shortening really).

Could you share your views on my doubts about Alice?
Also, would Alexandra be a better option?

Alice is lovely. I've met only one irl at the numerous stay and plays, playparks and library sessions we go to.

They are both good and classic names. I don't know any Alice and know a few Alexandras butI don't think it's a very common name. I personally prefer Akexandra but there's absolutely nothing wrong with Alice.
Elizabeth and Alice are both well known names and don't think they are similar.
In the end it's still your child and you need to decide which name you prefer and suits your daughter. Good luck

What did you decide OP? We are in the same boat, DD is 3 weeks old and Alice was my top choice but now having doubts and just can't make a decision

Maybe (mn baby names classic advice Grin) wait till she’s here and see what she looks like? We left it till we were in theatre with dc2, planning to wait till we saw what he looked like. The doctors and nurses were helping us choose. Was really lovely. A very nice memory. The doctor who delivered him was Irish (like I am) so that swayed us a bit towards our Irish baby name choice! When he came out, he just looked like a X. It suits him perfectly.

I have been thinking about the names for so long that I am just tired, going off all names and doubt myself, especially when I have to make such a big decision. Thank you all for your responses though, really appreciate it.

Goes well with the other names have you thought of Alexandra?...
I wouldn't say they where too similar sounding.

I much prefer Alexandra. There are all kinds of nicknames as well - Ally, Lex, Lexie, Alex, Alexa, Alexis, Xandra etc.

I’m and Alice so I tend to notice the name! There are a fair few babies called Alice at the moment (at least round where I live in the suburbs of London). It is a pretty timeless name though. My name is never shortened

Would Alexandra become Alex? It sounds almost identical to Alice anyway I think.

I prefer Alice definitely and think it goes beautifully with your other dc's names.
Is there any chance your dd1 will ever go as Lizzie? Would you prefer the sound of Lizzie & Alice?

I like Alice, but I think it is too similar to Eliza. Fine with Elizabeth though! It is also very common in my area, dd is 14 months and we know of at least 4 her age, plus some toddler Alice's. Regardless, I don't think it will date, it is a classic name and has always been used.

I love Alexandra.

Alice is such a beautiful name, it ages well and really compliments her sibling names.

I only know two Alice's, despite having children at primary and secondary.

Alexandra is a strong name, but it is not as elegant. And 'Alex' is just clunky.

As much as Iike Alice it does seem to blend in and get lost a bit with Elizabeth and Edward but I feel that about Alexandra too.

I much prefer Alice to Alexandra (although I’m biased I was bullied by an Alexandra and it’s tainted the name somewhat!)

I’m not sure Alice would get shortened as it’s already very succint. It’s also a great name for a baby as well as an adult.

I love both Alice and Alexandra, but am with you on disliking the usual abbreviations of Alexandra.

How about Alicia nn Lissy?

Much prefer Alice to Alexandra and I do think it goes perfectly with sibling names. I don't mind Alexandra but am not keen on the shortenings of Alex or Alexa (since it was used by Amazon.) Alice is classic and timeless. I have 4dc under 12 and the only Alice I know is one in her 40s! We are in the South-East.

Alexandra almost always gets shortened to Alex. The two adult Alexandra’s I know are Alex anyway, just as the adult Alexander’s are Alex. It could also end up shortened to Lexi which is all manners of dreadful.

Alice is a classic, very classy. It’s my DGM’s name and in turn, my DD’s middle name. I love it.
