Hello! My husband and I are considering "Walter" for our son, nickname would be Walt. Husband's American and loves Walter Cronkite/Walter Matthau, but we are residing in London, and I worry about how our son would be treated with such a clunky name! Any thought?! Thank you!

My first thoughts are Walter White and then Walt Disney but I don’t overly dislike it as long as you’re in a ‘naice’ part of London where the T will be pronounced. In most London accents it risks sounding like water with a dropped T.

I think Walter is a fantastic name and Walt is an awesome nickname too.
People may think it is dated, it's also a very grand and bold name. I wouldn't let others opinion of it put you off. Also a lot of names from the early 1900's (Albert, Arthur, Louis, Oscar) are coming back into popularity now, names tend to get recycled every 100 years, so I think Walter could rise in popularity soon anyway, and people will come to throw away their 'old man' association.

Awful. When your baby is born you think they're the most gorgeous and squishy and lovely thing you've ever seen. I can't imagine looking at my tiny son and saddling him with such a clunky unattractive name. There are thousands of names available!

I think it's awful. I grew up knowing a Walter and he hated it. He calls himself Will as he can't stand Walter.

Not my thing - it seems old-fashioned in a not-so-good way to me. Also does anyone else remember Walter Wurx?

I loved this name, unfortunately in my southern (lazy) accent it sounds exactly the same as if im saying water, like wa-(drop the T)- er.
Whenever i would try to say it properly it was lole i was trying to then over pronounce the L if that makes sense.
Its a lovley name so go with it if all your friends dont have strong london accents, or it wont sound as lovely.

I'm not a fan of it either. It makes me think of the Beano character who in turn makes me think of rees-mog.

Walter is gorgeous try not to be swayed by negative posts... If you love it go for it, you could shorten to Walt it doesn't have to be Wally Wink
