How many baby Asher's do you know?

Baby boy is due in a few weeks and after really struggling to find a name DH and I both like we thought we were finally settled on Asher (middle name will be Jack) but we've now found out Asher was apparently the most popular boys name of 2017 Confused

We had no idea the name had become so popular. DH thinks we should use it anyway but I was one of five girls in my class at school with the same name and hated it so I'm having a wobble.

So what do you think? Is it too popular? Should we go back to the drawing board?

DH is now worrying we're going to be accused of "cultural misappropriation" because we're neither Jewish or Hindu. This name thing is a bloody minefield!

I like it, but i know a woman in her mid 20s called asher, never known any others with that name

I only know one in the states here, he’s about 6, he is from a Jewish family. I really like the name

The official name data for 2017 hasn’t been released by the office of national statistics yet.

But as Asher was ranked at no. 288 in England and Wales in 2016, I very much doubt that it’ll be anywhere near the most popular boys name in 2017.

The darkgreener website linked below shows name trends in England and Wales (since 1996) based on office of national statistics data.

Love the name. Have not heard of or met any Ashers though.
It has a great Biblical meaning too: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asher

I don't know any either and have a 9 month old dd so spend a lot of time at baby groups etc.
I don't think that's the most popular of actually named babies, just seems to be viewed a lot

Nameberry is a US website. The Independent article writer doesn't seem to realise that. The name been looked up a lot, but that's not the same as being actually given to children. When's your baby due?

I know of one. Born relatively recently. Was told by a friend because she thought it was an odd name. That's because we're in Northern Ireland and there's been a high profile court case about Ashers Bakery.

That's what we were hoping. I work with kids and it's made the name choosing process so much more difficult as every name DH suggests I'm like "nope, that one's been ruined for me!" Grin

None and I have a 4 year old DD (I’ve seen the class list for her new class, none there and none at her current nursery ), and a 6 month old.

That's interesting, chocolate as I didn't realise it was also a Hindu name, baby book said it was Hebrew in origin I think.

I work with under 5's. I know one. It's on my long list of names with the bonus being (or so I thought!) that it's not too common. I thought Jack, Oliver etc were top.
