Violet Elizabeth

We’re going with Violet as our dd’s first name, and were considering Elizabeth as a middle name for family reasons and because I think it flows well with Violet. Thought the combination sounded slightly familiar and a quick google helped us realise why - the Just William books, which I was a big fan of when I was younger!

Would the Just William books and Violet Elizabeth Bott (“I’ll thcream and thcream till I’m thick”) put you off using Violet Elizabeth as first and middle name?

Our surname is one syllable but doesn’t start with B if that matters. It’s something along the lines of Scott, Jones etc.

If you think Violet Elizabeth is a no go, do you like any of the following?: Violet Olivia
Violet Amelia/Emilia
Violet Aurelia
Violet Victoria
Violet Felicity
Violet Penelope
Violet Antonia
Violet Cecilia
Violet Evangeline
Violet Natalia
(I think four syllable names with the stress on the second syllable flow best with Violet and our surname, though feel free to say if you disagree)

I realise I’m probably overthinking this, but naming a person is such a huge responsibility!

Would this be a problem for your child though as not many of her peers would be familiar with the books?

DC2018 · 26/08/2018 22:39

Violet Elizabeth is nice but Violet Aurelia is my favourite by far. It flows beautifully and I love both names individually x

SassitudeandSparkle · 26/08/2018 17:23

Yep, another Bott here just reading the thread title!

MouseClogs · 26/08/2018 17:22

Have to be honest, Bott was my first thought too (am in my mid 20s).

GraceMarks · 26/08/2018 17:20

Bott is definitely the first thing that came to my mind, but I'm not convinced it matters. How much use will her middle name be getting? I never use mine and only my immediate family even know that I have one.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 26/08/2018 11:58

I don't make the connection with Just William but (vaguely) know the character you mean. I'm also relatively rare on mumsnet that I don't think middle names matter that much (as long as the parents like them). They are not used in real life very often. If you like Elizabeth use it!

TubeTop · 26/08/2018 11:54

... Bott! You can't.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/08/2018 11:52

I really like Violet Olivia, it's lovely !

AlphaJuno · 26/08/2018 11:29

My little sister is called Violet Elizabeth, surname begins with B too! Tbh I didn't know about the Just William books. My mum did but thought it didn't matter. Violet seems to becoming quite common these days imo.

vampirethriller · 26/08/2018 10:43

Just William sorry

TatianaLarina · 26/08/2018 10:00

Yep, Bott.

Violet Aurelia or Cecilia are beautiful (and much nicer than Elizabeth).

themagicamulet · 26/08/2018 09:22

Instant Bott here too! I like Violet in theory but would worry about the risk of it being shortened to Vi, which is a bit too headscarf and curlers for me. Love it as a middle name though.

bridgetreilly · 26/08/2018 09:04

Violet Antonia or Violet Felicity.

Ozgirl01 · 26/08/2018 03:40

I haven't heard of either before (probably because I'm not British?) but I wouldn't use Violet Elizabeth now that you've identified less than positive associations.

My favourites of the options are Violet Emilia, Violet Penelope and Violet Cecilia.

Very old fashioned too. Is that what you're aiming for?

OlennasWimple · 26/08/2018 01:56

I'd avoid it - the association only has to be made a couple of times for it to stick

I'd go for Elizabeth Violet, EV for short

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/08/2018 01:37

Never read Just William so wouldn’t make that association

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 26/08/2018 01:36

Violet Emilia is my favourite but honestly all your options are lovely (although I agree - don’t use Victoria, the alliteration is too much!)

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/08/2018 01:31

Agree that all of your proposed middle names are infinitely nicer than Violet.

Dottierichardson · 26/08/2018 01:12

Immediately thought of 'Just William' too and what a horrid child Violet Elizabeth was!

villainousbroodmare · 26/08/2018 01:08

Bott also. I like all of the middle names you've shortlisted. I like them much better than Violet. I also think they flow infinitely better in reverse order; Antonia Violet sounds nicer to me than Violet Antonia and same with the rest.

TheDowagerCuntess · 26/08/2018 01:03

Bott was my immediate thought on reading your thread title.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 26/08/2018 00:54

Sorry to be a pain in the arse but I’ve just thought of Violet Beauregard in Charlie n the chocolate factory 😳
Even if her peers don’t remember Just William, they’ll know that one!

Somerville · 26/08/2018 00:50

Don’t use Violet Elizabeth. Especially not if your surname is Scott or anything else that rhymes with Bott!
