MIL won't stop giving name suggestions and asking for the name

Hi,

This is my second pregnancy and my MIL was the same in the last one. I just have had enough really, I don't want to tell her the name we chose as last time we did she was rude about it.

As we don't give her a name she is constantly suggesting names and gets put out if we say we don't like them. I try to be polite and say its to similar to DD or someone in the family has it already.

She just won't stop and I don't know what to do about it. DH can't say a word to her as she gets all high rate with him.

I just want the name talk to stop and just want to enjoy going over to see them wtih DD like we did before.

Any suggestions? 🤦🏼‍♀️

MrsJayy and Timeforanothernewone 😮

I would have been furious. I was annoyed enough when MIL told me the name we had chosen was “boring” (because it was normal and SIL has made up “unique” names for her children!)

Timeforanothernewone · 25/08/2018 14:14

She could do what my nan did. Ring every single member of the family after ds2 was born and tell them he was called "William" when actually he was called "Alfie" names changed but chosen to demonstrate just how DIFFERENT the names were . My family were most confused because "William" really really doesn't go with ds1's name

marants · 25/08/2018 14:14

Yep, we made up names also, really weird ones. It stopped her.

(One of them i wish we had used now for real though!)

Potkettleblack2 · 25/08/2018 14:10

My mum does this. I've told her I don't want her to talk names, but she still does. I just smile, nod and say "yes, that's nice" to all names she suggests!

MrsJayy · 25/08/2018 14:07

Agree with Pps add to the list and move on say you are waiting to see when baby is born to give a name. Not everybody including family is going to like a name don't let her bother you.
Late mil called new born Dd Rachel for 3 weeks her name isn't Rachel but mil thought Rachel suited her

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 25/08/2018 14:06

You know it’s probably just a matter of time until she suggests the name you’ve already chosen and then she’ll take credit for it forever.

Do you think waiting until the baby is born to tell her will make her less rude about it? Or do you think she will just be rude anyway when you have a new tiny person to look after and she will be even more annoying?

I would probably just say tell her. If she grumbles oh well. Or she might even like it.

SassitudeandSparkle · 25/08/2018 14:05

Or you could say that last time she asked about the name, she was rude about it and you don't want to talk about it this time around? Just say that every time she says it.

4GreenApples · 25/08/2018 14:01

Pick out a few names that you would never call your baby in 100 years and tell MIL those are the names on your shortlist.

Bonus points if they’re names MIL hates.

QOD · 25/08/2018 14:01

don’t get irate, tell her it’s going to be ‘insert hideous name’ that rhymes with your surname
Biff Smiff
Bill Williams
Bob
Gertrude. And then look blank when she says she doesn’t like it

Timeforanothernewone · 25/08/2018 13:59

My nan gave me loads of names that got "added to the list of names we will 100% never name our child "

She was so happy the names went on the list!

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2018 13:58

or High Zak or High Van?

MikeUniformMike · 25/08/2018 13:55

How about High Reen or High La?

WooYa · 25/08/2018 13:35

My MIL doesn't like DSs name and all through my pregnancy kept asking for names so we made up the weirdest names and told her those instead

optimusprimesmother · 25/08/2018 13:13

Don’t say you don’t like them, just say

‘Oh that’s nice, I’ll think about it’ or ‘oh I’ll add that to the list’

Then choose what the hell you want!

DNAwrangler · 25/08/2018 13:12

Tell her a made up name. Preferably one she hates.
