John, Johnny or Jonny?! Help!!

Opinions on John, Johnny or Jonny please! Perhaps with Eric as a middle name? Like the idea of Johnny the most at the moment but opinions welcomed please :)

Not Johnathan - it looks like you can't spell. I know there are probably several Johnathans and Jonothons but Jonathan is the best way to spell it.

Go for Johnathan or Jonathan and then he can choose whatever shortening he likes!

Johnny Rotten, Johnny Ramone, Johnny Depp. It's a cool name. I prefer John to Jonathan.

John is a great name, it's getting popular again (i know 4 under the age of six now) all called Johnny or JonJon.

How old are the people thinking Jonathan sounds more boring than John? When I was growing up 80% of boys were John, Dave, Rick/ Rich or Steve. All now in their 40s and 50s now - the names are dull as ditch water and middle aged to my ear now, not old enough to be grandad cool names, just beige and boring and mundane.

Jonathon always sounds a bit too sensible and boring. John is making a comeback as a classic name, I like it a lot. Then to be known as Jonnie , has character.

John is lovely, classic and feels fresh in this generation. I know two young ones - 15 and 11 - both known as Johnny with no condom-related issues.

Ok if you call him Johnathan then technically it shortens to Jon or Jonny, but it sounds the same and Jonathan looks so much better written down than John.

I agree Jonathan has much more to it as a name than John. John is "Dear John", a balding 45 year old man in a beige cardigan... Johnny is a little toddler or trying to be cool (Johnny Depp, old songs with slightly rebellious American teens called Johnny).

Call him Jonathan, then you/ he can use any or all your John / Johnny / Jonny options at different times, as seems to suit.

John is lovely. I like Jonathan too. I definitely would use one of those two. Johnny is an informal variation that won't work well in every scenario in his life.

John. It's a lovely name, and an underused classic these days. Johnny is too nicknamey, though nice for a child. John isn't short for Jonathan - it's an unrelated name - so I wouldn't go for that if you want a form of John.

I know a Jonathan who was always called that by family and Jon by his friends. I also heard of one called Jonty.

I know a very cool 8 year old John!

I’d go with Jonathan, lots of abbreviation potential and it flows best with Eric.

I’m 47, and I have never used “Johnny” to mean condom. I’m aware of this use, but it’s rather archaic. I work with a guy called Johnny (mid 30s), it’s fine.

For crying out loud....will actual grown adults please stop projecting childish musings and attempting to rubbish perfectly good names.

I’ve known many Jonnys and Johnnys, of varying ages, none of whom have ever been called condom. Because that’s just fucking ridiculous! Mist of them are in the Army, where ‘hilarious’ name associations are actively encouraged....but still none! Absolute bollocks.

John. Definitely. It’s cool and understated whereas Jonathan is a bit fussy and wet.

I grew up with a lot of Johns/Jonathans, and while a few of them were Johnnys when we were at school, not a single one is now.

In other words, adults don't want to be called Johnny. So I'd call him John officially if it was me,.
