Honest opinions on Rupert?

I really love the name Rupert but can imagine people pulling a Confused face behind our backs when we tell them.

What is the MN opinion on the name? Would the child grow up hating it? Anyone know any school aged Ruperts and do they pull it off?

The only one I know is very posh but lovely with it and completely able to laugh at himself for being a bit of a snob at times. Its a nice name but I can imagine it suiting some people better than others somehow.

At the end of the days names are very subjective. If you do a poll on Mumsnet you’re going to get people who love and hate every name.

A friend just had a baby Rory which is a name I really hate but sometimes gets suggested on threads as being in the same vein as Rupert.

Other friends have had a Chloë and a Tabitha both names I adore but frequently get vilified on here.

If you like it, go with it!

My friends boy is called Rupert. He gets Roo, Rupes, Rupert. He's a lovely boy who isn't at all 'wet or soppy'. His parents are not at all pretentious, just normal people! He's got a baby brother called Woody.

I wasn't a big fan, but there's one in DD's year and he's lovely, and has quite changed my mind on the matter.

I have one and people generally say they love the name. I’ve had lots of positive comments about it.

I’m not pretentious, me and DH are both working professionals juggling childcare and an endlessly messy house. Our children at local village school (can’t afford private but probably wouldn’t opt for it even if we could). Just fairly normal. Rupert does wear a lot of Boden though...

I have one he’s 3.

We are very far from posh and pretentious.

Whatever name you pick someone will think it’s posh/chavvy/common or whatever so just pick one you like best.

I’ve heard of a few other baby Ruperts in the last few years- all very ‘average’ families. I think it’s just a nice name.

You do know that 'a Rupert' is British army other ranks slang for an junior officer? (and not in a good way, eg - he's a right Rupert. A bit useless.)
The kind of upper-middle class bloke who used to be known as a chinless wonder or a deb's delight.
So I presume the name was fairly common 25/30 years ago in the kind of circles inhabited by MC parents whose sons went to Sandhurst.

The only Ruperts I have known have been boarding school, trustifarian types. If I said ‘He’s such a Rupert’ I think many people would know what I meant!

Saying that, I do think Roo is a pretty fab nickname. And I think if there can be baby Alberts and Ralphs then there can also be baby Ruperts!

I know a few Ruperts and while a couple went to public school, I can think of one lovely surfer dude called Rupert (known as Roo) who always completely crushed everyone’s idea of a ‘Rupert’. Nobody thought his parents were pretentious - it was just his name.

I’ve always liked it - just checked the baby name graph and it’s been rising in popularity for a while. Over 400 little Rupert’s were born last year. Definitely due a revival!

Nice name, I grew up with a Rupert & he's a nice man with a quirky arty job now.

I know other people think it's posh but I don't remember any negative comments at school etc

Yes, as PP said Rupert the bear! I don’t like it personally, but I think it is increasing in popularity.

Ok, mostly positive, well, more positive than I anticipated. Maybe it's a go-er.

The other name we like is Arthur but feel that's very popular at the moment in our area.

I really want to like it but I’ve worked with too many middle aged Hooray Henries called Rupert or Rupes for short. And then there’s Family Guy. So it’s a no from me.
