Honest opinions on Rupert?

I really love the name Rupert but can imagine people pulling a face behind our backs when we tell them.

What is the MN opinion on the name? Would the child grow up hating it? Anyone know any school aged Ruperts and do they pull it off?

I read this 20 minutes ago and I still have Rupert the bear stuck in my head, so I had to come back and comment. Apart from the bear thing, it's cringingly posh, and a bit wet, and I say that as a person who is also quite posh. I much prefer Rueben. It's still posh, but doesn't have the bear problem.

I adore it!

I put it in the same bracket as Rory, Theodore, Henry, Arthur, Albert - old and classic but still quirky.

It reminds me of a floppy haired checked trouser wearing toff.
I still associate it with Rupert the Bear but his peers might not.
I really don't get the love for Arthur. I remember it being an awful name and the one I knew was embarrassed to be called Arthur.
If course times change.

Love it. Great name. If DD has been a boy she would have been called Rupert (nn Bear).

I confess to being a tiny bit influenced by my love of Rupert Campbell-Black. BUt still a great name.

If there is one thing I have learned, and that’s not to give a monkeys what anyone else thinks about your name choice. Don’t ask people if they like it. Just tell them that’s what it is. Both my DD names have been absolute marmite, but I don’t care. I still love them.

People will roll eyes at all sorts of reason.
I.e.
a) ooh that’s a bit out there (insert a non top 20 baby name
b) oh ‘another’ Ellie/Millie/Gracie/Alfie/Oscar etc
c) ooh that’s a bit try hard (insert Rupert, Ophelia etc)
d) oh how chavvy (insert Tracy/Darren etc)
e) oh how dated (Sophie, Chloe, claire, Louise)

But essentially all of the above are nice names. And ALL that matters is that you love it.

People will have a tendency to swap the R for a W, presumably making it sound even wetter than they already perceive it to be.

Arthur was my dad's name (ok for old men, my dad would have been 99 now)

I really like the name Rupert!

I don't think it's too try hard and I don't find it pretentious.. Yes it's slightly posher than some names, but is that really a bad thing? In a world full of Jaydens & Jaxxons, I'd rather be a Rupert 💁🏼‍♀️🤣

It’s a regal name. Makes me think of German kings and princes!
We’ve got one already in the wider family so I don’t want to use it for my DC, but I love it.
Most Ruperts I have known have been a little bit posh but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The coolest Rupert I know is a surfer dude who goes by Roo.

My dad’s best friend growing up was Rupert. I’ve always liked the name as a result.

It’s a lovely name. Obvs has the Rupert the bear connotation but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Never stops people using Thomas.
