If you read the name Maia, how would you say it?

May-a or Mi-ya

I'd say May-ah

Astrid2 · 20/08/2018 22:12

@AtticaRose eh? My-schwa???

I'd pronounce it My-a. Prefer spelling Maya though.

EekThreek · 20/08/2018 22:09

Spelled that way I would pronounce My-a

DS's friend with the same pronunciation is spelled Maya

OutPinked · 20/08/2018 22:06

I would pronounce that may-a. If you’re wanting Mya then spell it like that.

TillyTheTiger · 20/08/2018 21:52

Maia was my favourite girls name for years, I think it's beautiful and the only reason we took it off our list was because I thought it should be spelt and pronounced the same way you prefer, and DH said the only way to guarantee people would pronounce it correctly was to spell it Mya (which I don't like the look of).

Bobbiepin · 20/08/2018 21:49

I've taught two girls with that name. One was May-a and the other was My-a. Unfortunately in each class there was also a Mia (Mee-ah) and a Mya (My-a). Hellishly confusing.

Dani18 · 20/08/2018 21:46

I wpuld say May-a x

Sunshine818 · 20/08/2018 18:55

My-a

Icklepup · 20/08/2018 18:53

My-a

Goostacean · 20/08/2018 16:11

My-yah.

Your DH’s version would be Mee-yah (emphasis on the Mee), IMO.

Madeline18 · 20/08/2018 12:51

Maya

Kingkiller · 20/08/2018 12:50

I'd have thought lots of people would pronounce Miyah as 'mee-a'. I'd definitely go for Maia.

user1906 · 20/08/2018 12:48

Thanks everyone. We are wanting my-uh, just cant decide on spelling!!

Dp wants Miya but i want something different like Maia or Maya !

Also my sister is called Temea, so dont want any resemblance to Mia🙈

My-uh

SleepFreeZone · 20/08/2018 11:02

My- uh

LeeMiller · 20/08/2018 11:00

Maia or Maya I'd say My-uh

Mia would be Mee-uh

househunthappening · 20/08/2018 10:54

May-a, because I know one.

Everyone gets it wrong though and calls her My-a.

pouraglasshalffull · 20/08/2018 10:51

May-a

Flamingosnbears · 20/08/2018 10:49

My - Aa

pipilangstrumpf · 20/08/2018 10:39

May-a

TTEA · 20/08/2018 10:28

Also. My gran used the spelling 'Maya' because she thought everyone knew who the Mayans were, Maya chocolate (Maya Gold - yum!) etc. Seems that's not the case Grin

IVflytrap · 20/08/2018 10:26

My-uh.

If someone told me it was pronounced different to normal, I would then think maybe "May-uh". But My-uh would be my default.

TTEA · 20/08/2018 10:24

My aunt is called 'Maya' and she hears is pronounced

  • My-A
  • May-A
  • Mi-A

However you spell it it will be pronounced incorrectly by some. I prefer the spelling Maya, but either way it's a lovely name!

butlerswharf · 20/08/2018 10:21

My-a

SoupDragon · 20/08/2018 10:15

Actually, if you mean me-a when you say mi-ya, I wouldn’t ever pronounce it like that. May-a or My-a for me.
