DD2 due in a couple of months. Which of these 2 do you prefer? These are the current final two but are subject to change Grin

Other names that I like but cannot use are Romilly, Merryn, Marnie, Cassia.

I love both.
I pronounce Juliet and Juliette the same way. Definitely stick to the Juliet spelling if you use it. I don't think Juliet needs to be shortened, but if you did, then Letty, Jet or Ettie would work. While Sylvie is gorgeous and modern I dislike Sylvia which feels dated to me.

Not much help here, but with the sister's name I feel Juliet works a little better as it has stronger sounds (though both are fine). Sylvie as a younger sister feels 'little sisterish' to me if that makes sense.

50/50

Sylvie is a fab name & you’re right it is now more commonly a name in its own right. I really love it!

Ellmau · 08/09/2020 17:46

Juliet.

itsjakeandamy · 08/09/2020 14:51

Juliet is great. The ones I know are never called Julie. It's a totally different name!
I prefer Sylvie though.

Oneandabean · 08/09/2020 14:41

Juliet is lovely and I would pronounce both spellings exactly the same, in midlands UK.

Sylvie just makes me think of a bitter old battleaxe I knew.

CB4RH · 08/09/2020 14:29

I have a Juliet and Sylvie on my shortlist for number 2. Do they go together though?

buttercup54321 · 22/08/2018 22:17

Juliet or Julianna

Highpeak · 22/08/2018 22:15

I have a 13 month old Juliet and I don't know of any other young ones (in North West)
Sylvie is cute though

kenandbarbie · 21/08/2018 21:15

I think I like both

Joeybee · 21/08/2018 06:23

I much prefer Juliet but with the Juliette spelling. I just think it is quite a versatile, timeless, elegant name.
Sylvieis a bit clunky and a bit plain. Sylvia is a good alternative to it

OneOfEach2 · 21/08/2018 05:53

FWIW English here (Eastern/South East), I would pronounce Juliet and Juliette exactly the same

panicovernow · 20/08/2018 22:16

Sylvie. My DD10 is Sylvie, never been a big issue with people getting her name wrong.

twoundertwo54321 · 20/08/2018 22:02

Sylvie

VitC, I’m Irish rather than American. The clip that I pasted is just where I place the emphasis on the sylabelles/letters rather than the actual accent. Maybe I do pronounce it similar to Americans though because as hard as I try I just can’t seem to say Julia-t and I pronounce Juliet & Juliette the same. I don’t want to be one of those twats though that can’t pronounce their child’s name properly Grin

Will have to ask colleagues in work tomorrow how they pronounce Juliet as I’m pretty sure we all say it the same way over here!

Sssshhhh

My girl is Juliet. Very uncommon, and that’s just the way I like it.

She’s Juliet or Jules

LucyFox · 20/08/2018 21:19

Juliet is lovely
I much prefer Sylvia to Sylvie.

vitaminC · 20/08/2018 21:17

I hadn't realised you were American, sorry. That does change things and it makes sense that they would sound more similar to you.
The clip you linked is pretty close to how I would say Juliette, with my English accent - stressing the last syllable - whereas I would stress the first syllable when saying Juliet.
That's probably just an English (or maybe even northern English) thing.

AnnieTheAlpaca · 20/08/2018 21:16

Love both. You can’t go wrong with either. Like them loads more than your other suggestions. I would personally go with Juliet; it just seems a stronger name.

SuperstarDJ · 20/08/2018 21:12

There’s very little difference in how I pronounce Juliet and Juliette if any.

I pronounce Juliet like it’s said here which to me doesn’t sound like Julia-t. Have I been saying it wrong all this time? Shock

Sylvie. Without a doubt! Could be shortened to ‘Vie’ or ‘V’.

vitaminC · 20/08/2018 20:58

Juliet I would pronounce like Julia with a t at the end. Like in Romeo and Juliet.

Juliette I would pronounce Julie-ETT.

Both are pretty, IMO, although Juliette probably travels better.

ChellySmuff · 20/08/2018 20:57

Juliet seems to be a pretty popular name where I am. There’s a 2 in one of our baby groups and a Juliette in another.

I do know a baby Sylvie, sister to Daphne (which is an awesome name!)

needyourlovingtouch · 20/08/2018 20:57

Oh my- are you me! These are two (fairly unusual I think) names which I love and would use if I ever had a DD (which isn't going to happen).

They are both beautiful. I think I prefer Juliet but Sylvia is so pretty however I knew a Middle Aged lady growing up so associate it with that.

SuperstarDJ · 20/08/2018 20:52

VitC how do you pronounce Juliet in comparison to Juliette?

One i’d really like to avoid a name that is overused especially as DD1’s name isn’t very common (not in my region anyway). I know that Juliet is a classic timeless name but I’ve yet to ever meet one of any age. What region are you in if you don’t mind sharing?
