‘Wet’ names?!

What a silly concept. It’s often upper middle class names that are perceived as foppish - some are hung over from the Beano, undoubtedly. For all the names quoted I can think of people who are incredibly strong and anything but wet.
Timothy West, the actor seems pretty unset caring for his wife with dementia.
Joseph Stalin had many, hideous failings but I’m not sure he was wet. Joseph Merrill was incredibly brave in the face of very nasty public challenges and unpleasant treatment.
Susan Sarandon as a Goodwill Ambassador and activist doesn’t strike me as wet.
Thinking of Rosemary’s and only Rosemary Shrager comes to mind. Again, not someone I’d think of as wet.
Plenty of very robust Mary’s starting with the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, of course and moving forwards to Mary Seacole and Mary Phillips the suffragette.

Just names.

Toby, Timothy and Julian are the ultimate wet lettuce names, as many posters have said.

Can't say I agree with Hector @FoofFighter considering he was the greatest warrior of the Trojan war!

The names that came to my mind were Toby, Eugene and Piers - I know all 3 and all 3 are senior military officers and hard as nails!! So that didn't work....

Walter, Miles and adult Jamies sound wet to me.

Sophie - as a child I misheard it as soppy so is the ultimate wet name.

I include "cutesy twee" as wet too - Daisy, Poppy, Honey I cringe when these names are used they sound ridiculous on adults fine for toddlers but they only toddlers for a few years.

I agree with the pps. Joseph, Walter and Susan really are wet...

I know several Tims who are no doubt Timothy on their birth certificate (who aren't wet in the slightest) but can't imagine a grown man choosing to be known as Timothy with the requisite vim or vigour to give anyone a good rogering

Well I have a Lucy so am obviously biased but she is furthest from being 'wet' than I can possibly imagine.

Lucy means 'light' - I don't understand how that is a name that just 'there' as opposed to any of the weird and unpronounceable names I often see on here.

Joseph imo is wet.
Lucy is quite the opposite to me. It reminds me of a ruby or something vivacious that glows.

Very interesting read, and I was thinking it was more by association to people with certain qualities that we know with those wet names in life, but then the 'wettest' name for me is Martin, and I don't know any in real life! I couldn't for the life of me put my finger on what it is about that name. Some other names I would class as wet though are definitely due to association.

Wet isn't the same as femine (in regards to boy's names) imo...
Casey, Daniel, Lucas. I've never actually met a Casey, but the name is abuut as strong as old lettuce in my personal opinion.

Mindy, Adeline, Callie.

For me, sometimes it is association with a person or character, eg 'Walter the softie'

Other times I can't explain why but can only imagine the name belonging to someone a bit insipid

The only adult Jamies are very wet and also an adult female Jayme. It does colour the name unfortunately.

To dh a wet or weak name as he calls them seem to be any name that can if over pronounced end in " errr , eww eee/y" So Christopherrr Alsitaerrr Matheww Lucy(lucee) Maiseyy I don't recall him using the phrase for girls names as much as boys names.. I told him he was being stupid and meant it

Funny how perceptions are different. I associate Lucy with really feisty, confident and strong girls I know, so don’t see it as wet at all.

Both my children’s names have been mentioned as “wet” names. Both of them are very dry indeed.
