‘Wet’ names?!

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

I think that Vowel-heavy names and the letter L tend to make names seem 'wet'

What makes Joe strong Confused I find it super soft and wet. John is strong! Jonathan even stronger.

It just shows how subjective this all is Grin!!

When someone is described as ‘wet’ I’ve always taken it to mean like a ‘mummy’s boy’ type personality (you all know the type)

I think Julian, Robin and Crispin are the ultimate 'wet' boys names.

I find them very strong sounding especially the 'n' at the end.

Soft or wet names are Noah, Alfie, Archie, Poppy, they sound so soft and wet!

Joseph isn't wet - Joe is a stong name.

Daisy and Poppy are wet, same as Gracie.
Dislike Hugo, Josh, Jamie,type names

@CaptainCucumber I think Amelia is a wet name. You don’t.

Neither of us is wrong, just like if I said red was a lovely colour and you disagreed.

It’s a matter of taste and opinion and there’s no right or wrong answer.

Don’t rake it so seriously, one of mines names has been mentioned (Samuel) and he is strapping & manly and wouldn’t take offence. Wet names to me are:

Rupert, Timothy, Malcolm, Colin, Toby, Jasper, Julian, Peregrine etc All lispy & drippy.

Dinosaur - true, but there usually is a general consensus, I.e Candida being posh, Lexie-Maii being ‘chavvy’

To say that popular names e.g Jack, Amelia, Henry are wet when they clearly aren’t is odd

@CaptainCucumber because, as has been stated on the thread by a number of posters already, it is entirely subjective.

You and I might view Henry as a strong name, but that doesn’t invalidate someone else’s opinion that it’s the opposite.

There is no measurement of strength in a name other than people’s opinions when they hear it.

I’d probably say ‘sappy’ rather than ‘wet’

Anything like Lilly, Maisie, daisy, for girls or Timothy, Alfie, Albie, Oscar, for boys. In fact anything ‘ee’ for boys, except Charlie. Charlie is the ultimate appropriate name all through their life.

I also think Lucy is a strong name.

It is a horrible thread, one of my dcs has been mentioned a few times. However, I guarantee that most names will appear at some stage. Wrongly imo. I mean Jack for example. How can Jack possible be considered a wet name? It’s one of the strongest names I can think of.

These threads are often derailed by people listing all the top 10 names and announcing they are wet/whatever because they’ve got a little Persophone and Peregrine at home who are mummies little angels and definitley not what at all Grin

Yeah, Jack Nicholson and Daniel Craig are so wet.

Wet to me is the sort of boy at school who was totally uncool/nerdy and was dressed by his mum and you could tell - Timothy, Julian and Justin.
