‘Wet’ names?!

I have seen multiple threads today where people have called names ‘wet’-both boys and girls names. What is a ‘wet’ name?! I’m a bit puzzled by this concept.

If this is a 'horrible thread' then so are all baby names threads. It's people giving their opinions about different names and I have found it fascinating.

Its interesting that some names seem to be almost universally viewed as 'wet' but others divide opinion

I've never considered Lucy to be anything but a lovely name but I'm not offended that some view it as wishy washy

My DD's name has been mentioned (only once mind!) and I couldn't care less

My DH's name and my eldest son's name have been described as wet, DS2's name as 'strong'. Doesn't bother me a bit, and I don't think it is a horrible thread.

For everyone saying it’s a ‘horrible’ thread that was not the intention. I was seeing names being described as ‘wet’ on numerous threads and was wondering what criteria a name has to fit to be labelled as such. Turns out it’s a lot more subjective than most classifications (if you can call it that) but I think I get the general gist. My daughter’s name has been mentioned once-couldn’t care less. Not everyone is going to like your DC names and certainly not everyone on MN. I don’t think it’s something we can be precious about and if it’s a sensitive subject for you the Baby Names section is certainly not the place for youGrin it has made for an interesting read though.

I find Reuben quite strong sounding, and also Magnus.

I don't find it horrible at all, but rather interesting and entertaining. I'm genuinely intrigued at the feelings people have towards names!

Well mine and DPs names are on here, mine much more so. I don't disagree with it and have always said it suits a little girl and not a grown woman. I don't think DPs name sounds wet at all.
Neither of my children's names have been mentioned thankfully.

I genuinely cannot believe that a PP thinks Adeline sounds wet. I think it's about the strongest sounding female name I've heard and I did consider it for DD which shows how subjective names are and how amazing and diverse names are!

I think some people are being very precious on here. In my opinion, Lucy is wet and flat. Other people don't think so, so they named their kid Lucy. Good for them, neither of us are wrong. No matter how many fictional characters or real people with that name you list Grin

I think it's strange that people are v much at odds on some of these when it's just the sound of the name rather than people you know or even a personality imagine. It's literally the sound. So I don't get Jack, Daniel as wet at all..

Anyone else waiting to see if there DC's names will be spared? Lol. Lucy is not a dog's name. Some people.

Oh to me they definitely are. There are plenty of 'older generation' names which aren't wet.

I really like Lucy. Neil, Ian and Alan are not wet sounding names - they are middle aged or older men's names.

Have told my Lucy that apparently her name is "wet"... she replied "yeah Lucy Burns was a wet lettuce right enough" in a sarcastic tone whilst making this face Hmm

But then people have been saying it's a dogs name for 16 years so I don't think she's much fussed about other people's opinions on her name Grin

It's funny how different everyone's associations of names are. I would never think of Elijah, Rufus or Noah as wet. To me they sound strong.

I tend to think flowery, romantic names as wet so: Lawrence, Gabriel, Raphael, Theodore, Reuben, although I do still like them, especially Reuben. For girls I think names like Petal, Blossom, Autumn. Although again they are very pretty.
