Help me pick an Irish name for ds!

Hi all, we're looking for an Irish boys name for baby due in a few weeks. We live in Ireland and other dc's also have Irish names. Surname begins with H and has one syllable (if that makes any difference!)

OH likes Senan and Cian. (Think I prefer Cian out of those two)

I like Oisín... love the sound of it, I would pronounce it Oh-sheen and not Uh-sheen. Slightly concerned about giving him a name that could cause spelling/pronunciation problems outside of Ireland though?!

Other names I've vaguely considered are Liam and Rory.

Any thoughts?

My ds is Oisín and we're in England. Yes i occasionally correct people (if i can be bothered) but i kind of expected "oh how is that pronounced". Its quite a conversation starter over here and they like asking about its origin. We pronounce it Uhsheen as pp said.

My dc go to a gaelscoil where all the Oisíns that I know of are Oh-sheen. My Pil also speak Irish as their first language and would pronounce it the same way.

Oisín (Uh-sheen) means fawn, and out of curiosity I looked up what Óisín (Oh-sheen) means...

Never heard Oh-sheen before, I'd stick with Uh-sheen if I were you! (I'm Irish and an Irish speaker and lived in Cork for a long time.)

I love Oisin - it's very very popular in Ulster and is pronounced as you do. I don't think you would have any problems with spelling or pronunciation in Ireland. Others is like

Ps I think Cian is a lovely name.
Oisin too (very similiar to girls' name Roisin) definitely harder to spell/pronounce but heyho, I'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of other children with unusuall spelt names and pronounciations in next generation.

I really don’t like Cian. Sorry. But i tend not to like C names anyway.

I do like Senan, Danaan, Aodhan, Dara, Ruaidhri, Naoise, and Patrick (not Padraig- sorry Grin)

Thanks everyone. Some good suggestions. I actually don't know any small Cians, only teenage ones Smile

I'm in Cork and most people here use the Oh-sheen pronuncitation, I think it's a regional thing.

I think Cian is very popular. Senan is awful!!

I like Fionn and Diarmuid. Quite like Domhall as well.And Rory/Ruairi(dh)

You might have to correct people on pronunciation of Oisín even in Ireland with your preferred way of saying it, I've only ever met Oisíns who pronounce it Uh-sheen :)

Thank you! Totally agree on how pronunciation issues would irritate me :) I'm really warming to Cian.

Forgot to mention, other names used by family members include Darragh, Conor, Tadhg, Finn and Ciarán.
