Sol for a girl?

I met a Spanish girl once called this and think it’s just lovely. It means “sun”.

Is it usable do you think? What associations come to mind?

Also, French speakers’ input appreciated: would this just be plain weird as a name to French ears, since “sol” means “floor” in French?

I've always thought of Sol as a boy's name (Sol Campbell wasn't the first - I met a little boy called that probably about 40 years ago)!

I quite like Soleil, although it is rare and I suspect some people wouldn't know how to pronounce it.

I'm Spanish and Sol is a very popular name in my family. My parents liked Marisol for me but in the end they went for my paternal grandmother's name, another very traditional Spanish name.

My great great grandmother was called Sol (María Soledad) and my great grandmother Soledad. I have three aunties with different versions of the name (Sol, Marisol, Solita), two first cousins Marisol and many other once and twice removed cousins called Sol and Marisol.
In fact until approximately the 1970s / 1980s all were baptised / registered as María Soledad but we're nn'ed Sol / Marisol... I think Marisol and Sol were not accepted as 'legal' names until the early 80s.

I have twins; two girls and we would have used Sol and my name. But in the end they were boy and girl and Sol had to wait. And then it was clear we were too many so no Sol!

I love the name, love the past and present Sols in my family (particularly great-aunt Sol, a Miss Marple-like character, and my lovely and sadly missed godmother auntie Marisol, who was a real ray of sunshine) and Sol is a name which really "matches" DH's Brit surname).

Go for it!

If you’re into Spanish sounding names, Verano is summer - and Verana is the feminine version which is used as a name in some Spanish speaking countries- Vera also works well as a nn? (Also allows for Ana?)

They don't sound the same. Similar but not the same.
Sol (mythology), a Roman sun god
Sól (sun), a Norse sun goddess

Haul isn't a name but Heulwen (Sunshine) is.

I know of a newborn Solara who presumably will get Sol (or Lara). It's a no from me. Sol sounds very boyish to me and I would expect the spelling Saul as well

I disagree with the consensus - I agree with you, OP, it’s simple, pretty. Yes, means “sun” but so what? Do you plan to live in Spain or Latin America? No issues with nicknames- it can’t be shortened. And it doesn’t sound masculine to me, either. I like it :)

I wouldn't use just Sol, Campbell is the first thing that comes to mind.

I know a Sol, he's short for Solomon. Often gets Solly. Wouldn't use it for a girl, sorry.

Not bothered about Soleil or any of the longer forms, I just love the simplicity of Sol!

I can’t speak for every French person but all the French I know should know that it was Spanish. It’s the first half of soleil anyway.

The solfège doesn’t really figure as Ray or Rae is commonly used in England nonetheless.

You’ll get a lot of mispronunciation of soleil in England tho, relatively few people seem to listen in French class...

(soleil is however masculine in French so that might seem like an odd choice to a native French speaker. Idk...)
