Alexa, nn Lexie? Just wondering about certain comments I’ve reveived

After hearing everyone tell me not to use it due to Amazon I’m quite sure Alexa is out of the running but just had some questions spurred by other posters. Have been told Lexie is chavvy (please don’t come at me with how horrible the word is as I’m simply parroting what I’ve been told) and am just confused/wondering how? Is it just me who sees it as a perfectly reasonable nn? Confused

Alexa is lovely but Lexie is chavvy, I'm sorry. Maybe use Ali as a nickname?

Was totally unaware Lexi or Lexy is sometimes considered a 'chav' name.

Alexa, Alexia, Alexis, Alexandra, I like them all.

I've never known anyone named either but would never have said they were chav names. Though Alexa is pretty well associated with Amazon ATM. Lexie makes me think of the Greys Anatomy character. But I think both are nice names. Alex is one of my favourite boy names, so Alexa is a win for me as well.

It's not my cup of tea, but that's ok. If you like it use it! This is why I'm refusing to tell anyone our chosen names because they put doubt in your head.

Chavvy is harsh but it's a very common name. Common as in occurring frequently

I have two amazon echos an an Amazon dot so I'm another one who only hears it as that now. I was in a shop the other day and a woman walked past calling out "Alexa" and I looked over assuming instantly she was testing out one of those devices, until her child went running over to her.

I'd never say a names chavvy. It's stupid because if you look at a cross section of families which certain types of mumsnet users call chavvy (horrible term really) that I know from school, work, etc you'd see a really quite random bunch of names

I know solicitors with kids called Jaden and Kallum. Which I don't think meets Mn approval.

Alexa is a lovely name so is Lexi!! I do think though that there's nothing wrong with Lexi as a name on its own, I also like Alexandra as a full name with Lexi as a nickname. But that's just me.

I really like Alexa. It's loads nicer than both Violet and Evangeline, neither of which I like at all (dated Victoriana). I'm not wild about Lexie but it's fine as a nickname for Alexa.

I have an Alexa and originally chose the name for the nickname Lexi. As soon as I had her I went off Lexi as a nickname and she is only ever called Alexa now. May change as she gets older / in school I guess.

The amazon echo Alexa thing drives me nuts - it wasn't about (or certainly not this popular) when we had our Alexa. I love her name but not sure I would choose it now with the amazon Alexa being so popular tbh.

Would agree with the posters from Scotland and agree that it's not chavvy. If you're not sure about Alexa, Alexandra would be an equally nice choice.

Just to add... I'm not a huge fan of the name however and think Violet and Evangeline are much lovelier. It's what you love the most that counts though.

My niece is an Alexa nn Lexi. Parents are both high earning professionals, wouldn’t associate it with chavs at all personally Smile

Everyone has their own personal associations with a name, no matter what it is but a name doesn't define a person. Being called/nicknamed Lexie won't make your daughter a "chav" just like the majority of people who are named/have named their daughters Ophelia or Persephone* don't actually think they're above everyone else.

*Using those two names as examples as they were on my list but been told they're too try hard lol.

I'm in Scotland and wouldn't say it was chavvy. I'm not overly keen on Lexie though, I'd rather Alex or Ali as a nn personally

Lex/Lexie sounds like you really like the law or statutes... Not a fan, tbh.

The name Alexia is a Greek baby name. In Greek the meaning of the name Alexia is: Defender of men, helper. Alexander the Great was a 4th century Macedonian king for whom the Egyptian city of Alexandria is named.

My granddaughter is named Alexia, and she's not Chavvy at all. She's intelligent, well-spoken, well-mannered and gorgeous...just saying.

Agree with PinkCalluna, I’ve lived various places in Scotland and wouldn’t associate the name with being chavvy at all, I quite like it. Reminds me of Monarch of the Glen! Grin

Alexis is a boys name across mainland Europe, and if on a girl I'd think Dynasty fan.

What about Alexandra, which can be shortened in lots of ways?
