Alasdair?

This is the only name we can both agree on equally for a boy. We’re unsure which spelling to use but leaning to Alasdair.

What are people’s thoughts?

I actually pronounce them very slightly differently but both with a very soft d or t. There's not a Scottish and English version as such. The English version is Alexander. With a d is apparently closest to how it would be said/spelled from the original Gaelic.

I only know one Alasdair who was in my class at school. My mum also knew one when she was young. It seems timeless to me, well known but not overused. That’s one of the reasons I love it!

I really like the name. A boy in my primary school class was called alistair (not sure of the spelling). His mum was Scottish. I don’t think I’ve really heard anyone else with the same name since.

It's lovely. I slightly prefer the Scottish spelling but either way it's a fantastic name that's underused.

This was on our very short list for our dcs, though ultimately we went with other choices. If we had gone on to have a third, we would definitely have used it with the 'd' spelling.

Love it. I would probably spell it Alastair, but like Alasdair too. I'm not as keen on Alistair.

My cousin has this name (and I'm still not sure how he spells it) but his name is almost always shortened to Ali and Al. He is a big wig in management consulting but still finds his name shortened.

We went with Alastair (middle name) even though we are in Scotland. We have an Alister in the family too which I quite like for the simplicity.

I've got one spelled with a D. We are in Scotland and people are aware of the various spellings and ask. He gets Al, but likes his "big name" too.

Our only problem now is if DT2 turns out to be another boy. So far they think she is a girl but she didn’t give them a good enough look to be sure. This is the only boys name we agree on!

I have one with your preferred spelling. We are in Oz and it's a bit of a pain for him as no one gets the spelling right. DH (Scottish) insisted on that spelling and I gave in. I would have preferred Alistair.

Great name though however you spell it. I still love it 18 years later.

He doesn't get called Al btw. I call him Ali but no one else does, he just gets Alasdair.
