What can Immy be a nickname for

We have a Stella Ottilie, if Ottile would be considered for a boy! For immy, Emiline, Esme, Imogine, Kimberley

Otto is a brilliant name. You should use it.

Imara is a pretty name which could give the nickname Immy.

I know an Ulric. It's a superb name.
There is also Urban, name of umpteen popes.
Or Undine/Ondine for a girl.

I am of course in complete agreement with those saying 1974 is a not a long time ago. It seems like yesterday to me. I vividly remember the two elections and the miners' strikes, the three day week, electricity being switched off for eight hours at a time, homework done by candlelight, etc etc. The one thing I don't remember from 1974 is Emmanuelle, as I was still very young.

Here's a vivid memory from 1976. In the middle of the school day, a note was sent round to all classes at my school, summoning us to an impromptu whole school assembly. Unprecedented. We were all agog. What could it be? Had someone died? Had there been a huge natural disaster? Had the IRA bombed Leeds? Had someone left graffiti in the toilets of such obscenity that the perpetrator had to be discovered immediately and publicly expelled?

We filed into the hall. The headmistress strode onto the dais and announced that Harold Wilson had resigned as Prime Minister and James Callaghan was taking over. Then she strode off. What an anti-climax!

I think Imogen is fine - I wouldn't choose it and I'm not keen on Immy, but lots of people like it.
Some of my suggestions were a little out there.
Emmanuelle could be a nice nod to M. MacRon.

Otis associations - lift, yes, but also Otis Redding (sublime) and Miss Otis Regrets, which is a great song. Does Ottakar's still exist? One near us got taken over by Waterstone's a long time ago, haven't thought of that name in years.

I'd avoid Ottilie. It's a lovely name, but becoming too popular. Octavius/Octavia, nn Octo/Occy? My DC have (very uncommon) long names on their BCs, but are known by shorter versions. Not because I think they're going to be judges, but just to give them more choice when they're older.

Ottakar is a bookshop, thought that would not be an obstacle for me. Otis is a lift. I would find this more problematic.

Otto is a perfectly OK name all on its own but I agree with whoever said you could switch to Ottilie for the girl's name and call her Ottie or Otty. Or you could go with Ollie, short for Oliver (or Olivia, I suppose). Or Odie for a girl, short for Odile or Odette. Or Ozzie, short for Oswald?

If you do go with Immy for the girl, short for Imelda, my association would immediately be with Imelda Staunton, who is a terrific actress, not Imelda Marcos, who is still alive (contrary to my first assumption!) but is nearly 90 and will be at best a footnote in world history by the time this little girl is growing up.

Failing that, what about Izzie for a girl, short for Isabelle/a or one of its many variants?

If you look at lists of people qualifying for e.g. the bar, there are all sorts of names on them.
On MN it is compulsory to pick a long version of a perfectly acceptable name and put the long version on the BC (e.g. Ella has to be Gabriella, Ava Avaline , Theo has to be Theodore and Leo Leonardo etc)
It is also compulsory to like long names but to only use a nn for everything.

What about Emmie, short for Emmeline?

I think it's only on Mumsnet that you have to give your child a so called "proper" name so that they can choose their name when they get older. I think if you like a name then call your baby that. I don't think it's a name that gets people a job or not. And by the time these babies are looking for jobs there will be lots around with less traditional names.

I don't like Immy as a full name at all. It's too cutesy and bland. I'm not keen on Imogen, but Ismene is great. And I like Imelda as well, but the famous one is Imelda Marcos, if that might bother you. I know a couple of girl Imans, too.
