It's honestly an awful name. Very ugly.

Olia/Olya is the shortened form of Olga in Russia etc. It is much prettier than the full name.

I picture Olga of Kiev, the first known female ruler of Russia, and a formidable and scary one to say the least. She was sainted for being one of first Christians among the Rus, but she was the sort of saint that definitely did not do martyrdom.

I don't like it personally, to me it's very harsh sounding. But if you love it, go for it. Someone is always going to have something to say about any name you choose.

I think it’s beautiful.
I’ve got a cousin called Olga but we are an Eastern European family.
It means “holy one” or “blessed one”

"Olga" is a Russian/Slavic version of Scandinavian/Germanic "Helga". It's pronounciation is rather harsh in English, but in Russian it is actually a rather soft name, with the "L" sound being a very soft "L" (there is not equivalent sound in English).

I quite like it. I like that it's not frilly. It's no different to names like Freya, Greta, Ingrid, etc. Helga is another form of it.

I don't personally like it as it seems harsh - a bit like ogre. Or it reminds me of a butch Russian gymnast.
Having said that, if you both like it then go for it!!! You'll never find everybody likes your choice of names.

I like it and if you’ve found a name you both like then don’t write it off because of what other people may or may not think. But if you’re settled on it and happy with it, I’d suggest keeping it to yourselves until she is here as the last thing you want is people's unwanted feedback, especially if you’re slightly anxious about people’s opinions!

Awful! Please just don't. Harsh sounding. I have a cousin whose parents loved this name, too. She legally changed it when she was 18 because it's a bloody horrid name.

Go for what you love OP.
Olga may not be to some people's taste but all names get stick on this site and in the real world!
If you call a child something in the top 20, people might say it's boring or common.
If you go for something more unusual like Olga, people will say it's too unusual!
The best thing you can do is go with what you love because no matter what name you choose, people will speak negatively.
Children grow into their names and often other people who know the child can't imagine them being called anything else once they've gotten used to the name! Even if they started off disliking it!
So definitely go with what you love because you'll regret not using the name you love for YOUR baby.

Doesn't have to be Slavic - I know a lovely Italian Olga. She's great, and the name has grown on me hugely since meeting her.

It's a little unusual, but I say go for it!

I think it depends on the surname ... I like Olga but it won’t work for everyone ...
Olga Parker - ok
Olga Macdonald - weird
Olga Oldfield - no!
Olga Brown - nice - very common surname + unusual first is great!

Having said that I like that it's got some strength to it. Olga is a lot better than a lot of the weak, frilly girls names that are currently popular.
