Does this first name work with our last name?

Joel Hughes?

Thinking possibly Oliver for a middle name?

This is hypothetical at the moment as DH & I have never agreed on a boys name but luckily have 2 girls so it wasn't an issue. We are thinking about having a 3rd though so would love to find a name that works that we both like Smile

We have a soft H last name also and funnily enough I've been sitting wondering about Joel as I really like it. I did decide I wasn't sure if it ran into the H too much though.

Joel Hughes is absolutely fine! Great name! I think there are soooo many name combinations that people could 'criticise' - for pronounciation, or what the initials spell, or what because they remind them of someone on telly!! Honestly, it is a great name and I bet it doesnt even cross anyone elses mind! Smile

I think it’s fine and you’re overthinking things a bit.

Names that end in S are fine too.

Sorry, to get back to your question. I actually think Joel Hughes sounds fine! I think a 2-syllable first name with your 1-syllable second would be better.

OP I feeeeel your pain! Our surname starts with H and it’s sooooo annoying! Joel, Lucas, lots of the names you’ve mentioned were on our list too. We have 2 boys. Boy 1’s name ends in S so the surname (if it was Hughes) sounds like Shoes, but the first name without the S isn’t a name itself so it’s not too much of a problem. Whereas Lucas/Luca is more of a problem.

Just waffling but god it’s annoying!

Henry Hughes?

Not in my accent (Scottish) but I do live in England so is that how it sounds in an English accent? The "sh" runs into the "h" but the "l" doesn't seem to (in my accent anyway).

I think Joel works fine with Hughes. I wouldn't think twice reading or saying it out loud.

Grin@ Dole Queues. I wouldn't have thought of that. and I usually go over names with fine tooth comb.
I was going to ask would you not consider Oliver, but Oliver Hughes sounds like All over yous.
Other suggestions
Dylan Hughes.
Nathan Hughes is also a good suggestion.

What I like about Joel Oliver Hughes, or Joseph Oliver Hughes is the initials JOH sound out Jo(e) which is what he’d inevitably be known as 😀

Any more opinions on Joel? Not really looking for other suggestions as I think I've considered them all during my last 2 pregnancies but a yes or no to Joel would be amazing. Thanks all.

There are names that work with our last name, it's just that, typically, we don't like any of those names!
