Would you pronounce the ‘s’ in Josiah as an ‘s’ (‘jo-SI-ah’) or a ‘z’ (‘jo-ZI-ah’) sound?

S

Cosmoa · 29/07/2018 21:28

I have to agree with a pp that I pronounce it somewhere between the two!

Joeybee · 29/07/2018 20:17

S sound for me.

Murine · 29/07/2018 19:50

Z for me but would copy whatever his parents told me!

PomegranateFairy · 27/07/2018 22:38

Z for all of them.

RedDwarves · 27/07/2018 22:35

Joe-SYE-ah.

No z sound.

On a similar note, it irks me when people pronounce Josephine "Jozephine" and Josie "Jozie". It put me off the name.

Picknickers · 27/07/2018 22:22

S for both!

DappledThings · 27/07/2018 20:16

Z for all of them. And Z in Isaac which came up on here before.

LoveInTokyo · 27/07/2018 19:51

Z

IVflytrap · 27/07/2018 18:08

Z. Joseph and Josephine also with Zs.

Sophronia · 27/07/2018 17:44

S for Josiah and Joseph

Kraggle · 27/07/2018 17:01

I’d go for S as I have a Josephine and I hate it when people pronounce it with a Z sound.

Pingipinguin · 27/07/2018 16:59

Z!

VeraViolet · 27/07/2018 16:57

Definitely 'Z'

It's the same as Isiah, which is pronounced I-Zi-Ah

If it had a double s, then it would be pronounced S e.g. Messiah

Biologifemini · 27/07/2018 16:56

S for both Josiah and Joseph

Based on my church attendance as a child!

SayNoToCarrots · 27/07/2018 16:56

Z

Icklepup · 27/07/2018 16:54

S

Agustarella · 27/07/2018 16:38

Z

strawberrypenguin · 27/07/2018 16:37

Somewhere between the 2 but closer to S I think! Sorry not very helpful!

foxtiger · 27/07/2018 16:36

I say Joseph with a Z and Josiah with an S, although I've never actually met anyone called Josiah!

Ginandplatonic · 27/07/2018 14:37

S (and for Joseph too!)

TroubledLichen · 27/07/2018 14:37

Sorry that should be with an S not a Z. Regardless the difference between the two is quite subtle!

TroubledLichen · 27/07/2018 14:35

Z for me because The West Wing is the only time I’ve heard it said out loud and that’s how they say it.

LoveB · 27/07/2018 14:33

Z. But Joseph with an S!

CherryBlossom23 · 27/07/2018 14:32

Somewhere between the two but more of an s sound. I think it depends on your accent. In America it would be pronounced with a very obvious S but I think it's slightly softer on this side of the pond.
