What’s wrong with Tabitha???

I have a Tabitha and I love it. Everyone we meet is really positive about it too.
Mil didn't like it when she was born but tough. Like you, when I was pg with dd1 we mentioned a couple of names to mil/dm and they were very opinionated so we didn't tell any of the names until after the birth. My babies, my names.
Have a Tabitha - they are awesome!

Tabitha is a nice name - I wouldn't have chosen it myself, but would think 'nice name' if I heard it on anyone else.

People comment on names when it's just an abstract idea; in fact, as you've found out the hard way, the comment freely and frankly - with their very honest opinions!!

When you introduce a new baby, and the name is a fait accompli, people are much more polite, keeping their true thoughts to themselves.

Just use it - if you love it, you will regret not using it, and it's a nice name.

I know of 2 Tabitha's. One is 4 and one around 20. I don't love it or hate it to me it's just a name. One is known as Tabby and the other by her full name.
If you love it that's all that matters plus it isn't massively popular that would be more my concern the popularity of it.

Never tell anyone the name youve chosen before the baby is registered.... they will view it as a discussion and tell you their feelings!
One of my close friends pleaded with me 'not to call your child that' when I told her our favourite name lol..... we still used it!

I love it - I was a total bewitched fan back in the day and that’s all it reminds me of not cats - you call your babies whatever you want don’t let people ruin your experience

I'm a pretty open person, but the frequency of being asked if we were shagging without condoms was a bit much. So was the list of reasons why people hated our chosen names. From out right just hating it, to long anecdotes about people they met once 30 years ago that were named that. I get that you associate names with people, which is why you will never find a name every single person will love. We learnt our lesson, and with DC2 and they all found out his name when they met him!

Anyway, apologise for the hormonal rant and massive derail op! I think Tabitha is a lovely name. But more importantly, you love it. So fuck them.

I know a few women and girls called Tabitha. Never met a cat with that name personally! I like it - it's a lovely name.

Tabitha makes me think of a female cat (Tabby for short). Get real.

The only reason I don’t like it is because I once worked with someone with the name and she wasn’t a very nice person. I associate it with ‘Bewitched’, rather than a cat though. My old beautician had a daughter called Tabitha and I did warm to it, as she was lovely so it sort of reversed my previous thoughts!

I don’t agree that it is ‘posh’. It’s a very old traditional English biblical name. 17c farmers’ wives would be called Tabitha.

But even if it were why can’t you use it if you’re not posh?

It's my first choice girl name OP , I like that it is feminine but not too girly or floral, it works for an adult and in all professions (ie no stripper type connotations), it's classic and not commonly heard, but not out there and too whimsical either. We find out the sex Wednesday, I'm really struggling with boy names, but do keep having a recurring dream about a tabby cat, so here's hoping!

Tabitha is a lovely name. There's nothing wrong with it. Except lots of people associate it with cats. Also it's quite a fancy name.
It's totally useable though, and I think if you told people that's what baby was called (once baby is here) they'd have no choice but to accept it, and would probably grow to like it.
This is why me and my Husband have decided not to announce babies name or sex until birth, I don't want other people's negativity to bring us down.

Mrs Tittlemouse is called Thomasina. It's Tabitha Twitchit.

Tabitha is the archetypal posh name where I live so if I hear it I just think red trousers/joules. This absolutely shouldn’t put you off - it’s simply what my association with it is. If it was witch that’d be much more positive wiggles nose

I love it too. Was going to call my dd this but was convinced she was a ds so didn't give it loads of thought. When she arrived I asked a few family members their favourite from a shortlist we had. Nobody said Tabitha so I crossed it off. Feel a pang of jealousy when I hear other children called it.

Only OK if it's after Tabitha Campbell-Black/Lovell/Rannaldini...

Joking aside, I think it's a lovely name and anyone who bitches at you is jealous of your good taste and not your friend (inappropriate )

I can't believe how divisive Tabitha is! Look at some of the names on the current thread "A sister for Wilhelmina" - nobody seems to be batting an eyelid

A good friend has a now teenage dd called Tabitha. She's known to everyone as "Tabs" - she is a really sporty, athletic girl and a bit of a tomboy, I think it suits her perfectly.

Thea isn’t a nickname for Tabitha. It’s a totally different name in its own right. It would be like using Sue as a nickname for Stephanie.

It's a cat name. But I still like it. It's like the female equivalent of felix.
