A middle name for Eira?

Hi,

We are due dd2 soon, and have chosen the name Eira (it's a Welsh name, pronounced eye-ra). We're struggling to settle on a middle name though. Our thoughts so far are:

Eira Rose
Eira Rosemary
Eira Bethany

Does anyone have thoughts or other suggestions? Thank you Smile

We’re thinking of Eira as a middle name. It’s pronounced Ay-ra in Welsh

My daughter is called Eira, pronounced Ay-ra as hubby's family are from north wales (although we live in England). Her middle name is Hope as she was conceived just before we embarked on ivf after a long infertility journey. She is our little miracle and we are always receiving compliments on her name. It's so pretty, she suits it so much. Good choice!

And the ra bit is like the ra in rat, not ruh.

Wyn is fine as a middle name for a boy or a girl but it is dated.

Snow White is Eira Wen, but Eira Wyn is also ok.
Eira Gwen is fine as they are both girl's names but it implies snow belonging to Gwen.

Coolhotsummer. It's a bit like A/ey/eh, but shorter.
More like the a in Katie.

I would say eye-ra and know of a friends great aunt (Pembrokeshire) and a little girl (South Wales) who pronounce it that way. I actually asked a first language welsh speaker the question about pronunciation and she kind of shrugged and said either is ok.
I quite like Eira May but May seems a bit bland compared to Eira so would probably go for something a little more unusual like Eira Wren or Eira Fern or something very traditional like Eira Elizabeth

heh i'm not a native speaker so more than happy to be corrected :D is there a specific translation for "snow white"?

ps i'd also pronounce ay-ra (rhymes with may-ra) but i learnt most of my welsh up north.

So the female would be Gwen

@Coolhotsummer 'Ei-' sounds like the pronunciation of the letter A when saying the alphabet. I think I would write it 'ey' for an English speaker. 'Ay' would be more like the word 'eye'.

South Wales Welsh speaking here and I’ve also never heard it eye-rah, I would say ey-ra. Not sure it suits a summer child tbh, although it it is very pretty.

Haf (summer), Enfys (rainbow), Heulwen (sunshine), Siriol (cheery) perhaps?

Beth, Bethan or Bethany would all be nice.

If you like the sound of Bethany and Rosemary what about Felicity or Verity?

The Ei bit is like a very quick Ey or Ey ( A bit like the difference between I and Aye) , the r is a clear r and the a is like the a in cat.
It's lovely in welsh.

I'm West born in South and we say Ey-ra. It's hard to type it phonetically.

I'm in South Wales, Welsh speaking and would alway say Ey-rah. Tbh Eye-rah just sounds wrong to me.
That said it's a lovely name. Eira Wen, Eira Lois (loyss, not lo-iss), Eira Sian, Eira Angharad....

Peggy we had wanted a more common or English middle name, as that's what we've done with dd1, but I love the meaning behind what you be suggested because as you say, it's very fitting! Will have a think on that, thank you
