More like Krystal, Lexi and Demi or not . . .?

Last post for me on names, I promise! Thanks to everyone whose posted on my other thread :). I'm feeling so anxious about getting this wrong for some reason, hopefully it's just hormones . . .

Only name we now have for a girl is Nina, which we both like. The only Nina I know is my DH's 90 year old Indian great aunt! When I posted it recently, one poster said that she grouped it with names like Krystal and Demi. This surprised me I thought it was probably a pretty squarely middle class name and is on the rise in popularity but I don't know any Ninas in the UK or anyone who has named their daughter Nina so I wanted to check.

I hate the "ch" word so I won't use it, but do you see it like "Krystal and Demi" or more like, I don't know, Anna (which would be on my list if it wasn't DH's ex's name!)?

I don't like it, not sure why. I think it's too nicknamey for me.

Unfortunately, class bias regarding names still affects things like job/university applications, teachers' perception of who are likely to be the 'naughty' kids, etc. I think it's fair enough to want to avoid those issues for your child.

I think of Nina Simone and Nina Bawden, and associate it with Germany/Russia/Scandinavia. It's international and neutral, like Anna. I'd class it as similar to Emma, Clara, Lena, Mia.

I think Nina is much nicer than Anna!

I would say it is definitely more anna that krystal in the uk... I see it as quite a classy name, but it is not necessarily viewed that way in other European countries.

I group Nina with Anna etc. It’s a nice name that I am not keen on because to me it sounds a bit insipid (like Alice) but even though I don’t really like it I can still see that it’s a nice name IYSWIM.

The only Nina I knew was sisters with Bethany and May. 30yrs ago. Nowadays, Bethany may be a ‘ch’ name, but these girls are as prim and proper as they come. School-mistress at a private school. Child psychologist. And solicitor. I’d put them in the non-‘ch’ category! 😊

Thanks DBN1 -- really needed to hear that. I never seem to "trust" myself, and regret everything, but that's probably not an issue for the baby names board! :)

I think it’s a lovely name. I think it has a continental air.

I definitely wouldn’t put it in the same vein as Krystal.

Nina is definitely a very Anna sort of a name. It's lovely. I've only met one and she was from a very 'naice' family Grin

Hmm, interesting Tatiana! One thing I like about it is that it works in lots of countries -- but if I try to figure out how it sounds in every country I'll never choose a name. Quite popular in France, Germany and the Netherlands and top ten in Belgium and Austria so I may just have to settle with that being OK!

I love Nina. I don't know any in RL. For me it's in the same ball park as Stella or Lois, unusual without being weird. I also like that it's not of a particular time such as granny chic names like Ivy or (IMO) a boring classic like Charlotte.

Class-wise, I think your friend has shown that everyone has their own perception of these things, and one man's Persephone is another man's Chardonnay.

There are a lot of Ninas in London and with a London accent it comes out Ninaaaah.

I like it a lot. I know a Nina in her 50s, and the name has always made me think of Nina Simone.
It's easy to spell and say. What's not to like about it.
