Are these names too much?

Esmeralda
Rowena
Rosemary
Arabella

I love long feminine names but I'm not sure if we are brave enough to use them. The above are the favourites but are they too much? Does anyone know any, what are their nicknames?

No I really like them. My favourites are Rosemary and Esmeralda. Lovely.

My DD middle name is Evangeline, it could of easily been her first name but we decided when she was born she x Evangeline. Nn is likely to be Evie but Evan, Angie, or Vannie are possibilities.

I agree with pps that Esmeralda is the only one that is perhaps a bit OTT. Not that keen on Rowena.

I think Rosemary is lovely, and due a revival. I have heard Romy being used as a nickname, which is quite chic.

For me only Esmeralda is too much. Just because I find it such an ugly name.

I know Rosemary, Rowena and Arabella.

All 3 are tall, slim and very bright. Lovely people.

Evangeline: perfectly fine, nn Evie
Esmeralda: a bit ott
Rowena: perfectly fine
Rosemary: perfectly fine, nn could be Rosie
Arabella: perfectly fine, nn Bella

Love Arabella and Evangeline. Esmeralda is far too Disney. I personally think Rowena and Rosemary are awful, especially Rowena.

Not my sort of names really but if you like them, go for it!
I had a Rowena in my year at high school.

But we once had a goat called Esmeralda and a goose named Rosemary!😂
They were very cute though!

I think Rosemary is lovely. Incredibly uncommon but classic. Lots of shortenings but graceful and uncomplicated in full.

I like Rosemary best out of the names you’ve chosen
Esmarelda is always going to have HunchhBack references but any of the others are nice ... Evangeline & Arabella will get shortened though ... maybe you could preempt that by choosing angie or ari instead of Evie or Bella?

I love Rowena - that's my hands-down favourite. And I like Rosemary as well. I think the others are on the frilly side.

I know an Arabella known as Ella. It's pretty but a bit long and a bit downmarket.
Esmae is just wrong. Please don't give your child that spelling.
It's Esmée.
Esmerelada - bit long. A bit Disney.
Evangeline - too long. So many Eves, Evas...
Rowena - I know one, gets called Ro.
Rosemary - a bit herby. Prefer Rosalind.

This is really useful, thanks all. I'm surprised that Arabella is the one most people think is too much as I know about five Arabellas! All young adult.

I suppose Esmeralda could be nicknamed Esme?

I love them but you may find they will get shortened if you are in England. English people are awful for shortening perfectly lovely names into some really crass version.

I think Esmeralda and Arabella are too much. Arabella seems very popular on MN although I've never actually met anyone called it, and I work with children so meet lots. I really dislike it.

Evangeline - this is nice. However I think she would become another in the horde of Eva/Evie girls.

Esmeralda - very Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I like it.

Rowena - not a fan

Rosemary - seems much older than your other choices iyswim. It's nice.

Arabella - overly frilly and flouncy and Bella esque names are overdone.

I'd go for Rosemary or Esmeralda.

My daughter wants an Evangeline when the time comes. It’s lovely. The only Evangeline I know was at school with my son and is known as Evie.
I don’t know an Esmeralda but I know an Esme but the full name would be a bit Victor Hugo for my taste.
I know a few adult Rowenas who are all known as Rowena.
Have a cousin Rosemary and she’s called by her full name but could easily be acRosie or Rose.
I know a few Arabellas in the 17-20 age group. Most are known as Arabella or occasionally Bella.

I know an (adult) Evangelina- she gets called Angie.
And a Rowena who just gets called Rowena.

The others are likely to be Esme (very old lady), Rosie (ok but not a very serious professional name for an adult), and Bella (which for our generation has the Twilight connotations. Or Emberg, if you are a little older Wink)
