Ingrid or Sonja

We want a Scandinavian name for our girl due to a family connection, but also one which works well in English. Which on of either Ingrid or Sonja do you feel work well over here?

I love Ingrid, it was my late grandmothers name whom I adored. I do think it gets misprounced in English though has people prounounce the d. Every name/word ending in a D in Scandinavian languages are silent

I used to flatshare with a Sonja (with a J) and it was never mispronounced - it’s very international which is perhaps why.
I like both but I think Sonja has the edge.

Ingrid is my daughter's middle name so I am biased. I think it's classically Scandinavian.

Sonia and Ingrid are both nice. Sonja will get mispronounced.
I prefer Ingrid and also really like Inge.

Maria I see what you mean but that could depend what your first language is if it has the j pronounced as y thing as many other languages don't - Sonia could also be pronounced like son-e-a by someone who hasn't heard it before and Ingrid In-gride So it doesn't really make a difference I suppose as people can mispronounced anything. My brothers jock and his american teacher thought it was french and pronounced it jzock.I agree she could probably just say Sonja with a j and people would know where the j went.

Sonja will be constantly misspelled (Sonya, Sonia)

I agree that Sonja may be mis spelt, the Sonja I know always says "With a J", when meeting anyone new.

I love Ingrid. Sonja may often be misspelt over here as Sonia, so it depends if you mind that.

Sonja is a lovely and underused name. It sounds really fresh and pretty.

The name Ingrid has been spoiled because the one I know is a very nasty piece of work!

I'm really not trying to be rude. But are you saying that Sonja is more likely to be mispronounced because your friend pronounced it with an English j?

I'm not a native English speaker either but managed to pronounce both names correctly (quite easily, seeing as they're both used in my native languages. I actually have an auntie named Sonia)...

Anhyow, I'd be rather surprised if someone named Sonja encountered a substantial amount of pronunciation confusion in the UK. Seeing as there are also people named Maja, Freja, Anja etc...

Ignore people on thread saying they don't like either, it's what you like that counts.

100% agree. Not like you're thinking of naming your child Fanny. Or Pippa...
