I’m 7/8ish weeks pregnant so we have a long time to decide but if we like the name Melissa what other names would you suggest to look at? I can’t say DDs name on here as it would out me! Also opinions on Melissa? Thanks in advance :)

I love the name Melissa and considered it for my daughter but I HATE Mel and melly and was worried in any event that was for too suggestive of Smell or Smelly (irrational fear perhaps)! Not very keen on missy or issy either - just little too cutesy for me. It’s annoying once you start thinking of other forms of a name you like as I really like Melissa.

Melissa is lovely.

Deborah could be a good middle name (it means "Bee")

Other suggestions: -

Amanda - Worthy of love
Joy
Dulcie - Sweetness
Amy - Loved
Saskia - Protector of mankind
Rona - My joy
Imelda - Powerful fighter
Trudy - Universal strength
Naomi - Pleasantness

Melissa is very nice. I only know one grown-up one, shortened to Lissa.

MCC85 · 11/07/2018 15:50

I'm a Melissa, it was engineered from a young age that my nn would be Lissa or Lissy and not Mel, I've also friends that call me Missy too.

Ree101 · 11/07/2018 13:25

I like Melissa! I'm surprised it's not more popular.

I also like Marissa, Alyssa, Clarissa and Carissa.

My dd only got Mel once she became a teenager and that was because she liked it.

coffeekittens · 11/07/2018 09:25

Thank you all for the suggestions and feedback, Melissa isn’t really a name that I’d usually pick but there’s just something about it, I especially like the Greek association with Honey as dd’s middle name is Honey. I like the nn Meli but am not keen on Mel. Watch me have a boy now that I’ve got my heart set on Melissa.

And to add, nobody has called her Mel yet. I thought she might get Meli here as it means honey but it's mostly Melissa or Missy or Lissa to friends and family.

mrsnec · 11/07/2018 09:13

I have a 3 year old Melissa. Her middle name is Eve,

Other names we considered:

Jasmine
Constance
Sophia
Phoebe
Abigail
Penelope

Xanthe was suggested by midwives but dd is definitely a Melissa and I'm glad we chose it. If you like it use it. I have not met another one dd's age.

MikeUniformMike · 11/07/2018 08:40

It's lovely. No obvious nn other than Mel.

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2018 08:37

My dd is Melissa and so is my best friend.

Apart from those two, I have never met another one.

It means honey bee in Greek and we fell in love with it.
