How weird is this name? But I love it!

OK, I know it's 'unusual' to say the least but I absolutely love the name Jura for a girl. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and am trying to gather names. So far, I'm unisinpired but my dp and I love the name Jura (we love the island itself and the whisky Blush).

So what I'm asking is, if you met a baby Jura, would you think weird or nice?

DramaAlpaca firstly, great display name! I love Talisker and can't wait to get a pet to call it that! Lived only a couple of miles away for three years.

PellyBay I'm very aware of the paps of Jura, and that baby Jura may eventually grow to a woman where people may comment on her lovely paps of Jura. However, for many, this doesn't seem to be the first thing that jumps to mind.

But now you've mentioned Bonnie Paps as a name, I may need to rethink Grin

I am from Russia and Jura is a boys name over there. Russian version of George I think? I wasn't aware of the Scottish association but I do like it

It's beautiful. As is the island. But you can't! The Paps of Jura! They're pretty famous. Have you ever seen the island? Paps means Tits. Surely you know this...

A long time ago I worked as a tour guide in Scotland. One of our company legends was about an American girl called Bonnie Paps who took one of our tours with no idea that her surname was just as well-known in Scots as her first name. She certainly knew all about it by the end of the tour...

I really like Jura, it' a name that's grown on me. If other island names can be used why not this one. I am sure it has been used as a girls name, if you look at the official list.

It's a mountain range which I can see from my garden. I like it.

It's also a mountainous region of France. It's a masculine word in French. I think it's quite pretty for a girl though.

It doesn't sound like a proper name to me. Have you considered Glenlivet? Macallan? Famous Grouse? Grin

I have a cousin called Afton if you are looking for a scottish name. The River Afton is a Scottish river and Robert Burns wrote a poem about it x

Thanks guys. It's good to hear different views. Other Scottish islands are an option but there's something about Jura that sticks out to me. This could be pointless as it could be a wee boy!

I'm not keen, it sounds like juror in most English accents.

Sula is nice instead.
