How weird is this name? But I love it!

OK, I know it's 'unusual' to say the least but I absolutely love the name Jura for a girl. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and am trying to gather names. So far, I'm unisinpired but my dp and I love the name Jura (we love the island itself and the whisky Blush).

So what I'm asking is, if you met a baby Jura, would you think weird or nice?

Jura is also a lovely area in
Switzerland and France. (I grew up in Southern Germany so our parents often took us hiking/camping in the Jura hills...) There are also other regions called ....Jura in Germany.

It's also a (slightly colloquial but not disparaging) term for law in German. (Iura = Jura...)

Anyhow, I really like it :) it's a bit strange but also really lovely imo.

I know 2 Russian boys called Jura. Not sure if its short for anything. They are nice kids though!

I love it. The only Jura I know is a dog but that wouldn't put me off.

Loads of nice names in the Scottish islands.

Jura is shaped like a boob though.

This made me laugh Grin But I think the Paps of Jura would be more of a funny joke than a deal breaker for the name... I'm sure it'll give her a laugh when she's older! Reminds me of a trip I went on to Cairnpapple Hill - stone booby hill. We Scots are such a literary people.

I also love the suggestions of Sula and Afton.

Yura is a very common name in Eastern Europe for a boy, (from Yuri). For me it’s very confusing for a girl as it’s such a male name, but I appreciate your area may have no issue with this

I’m not a lot better of weird names, but I really like Jura. It would be unusual, but still sound like a proper name.
I love Jura island too op. I’ve sat on the beach in front of Jura House and watched an otter fish for ages about 4 metered away from me.

I know a baby girl called Jura. Named after the whiskey. No others have used it as a name. Not the worst name I have heard. When she gets to s condary they will call her Jurex though.

I like it written down but in my accent it is more D'you ra which isn't as pretty. Maybe don't ever meet me so I can't mangle it?

It’s also the covering of the brain and spinal cord. Spelt dura. I don’t really like it as a name..

I thought mountains as well. To be honest, I didn't know it was a scottish isle (but guessed from the mention of whisky!)

Nice choice!

Been in use in Scotland for about 200 years so not unknown as a forename. Mostly used for girls, but there are a few boys too, and for some reason is popular as a boy's middle name. So if you do have a boy then you can still use it! Smile

I like it.
DH is a bit Scottish on his fathers side and we have an island name in one of the kids names. My great aunt had the same name.
Jura is shaped like a boob though. Hence 'paps'. That wouldn't put me off though.

Sounds like juror.

Which makes me think of the rural juror from 30 Rock - watch the clip of it on YouTube, and you might see the problem

In a Scottish accent if sounds nice. Yorkshire or Cockney not so much. So.. depends on where you're from.

This may not matter to you, but have you checked out the meaning of the word 'Jura'? It's generally reckoned to mean 'Deer Island' . That's not a bad meaning at all- red deer are elegant and magnificent, and the island is lovely . And I expect you know the meaning anyway ....
