We had decided on Sophie for a name and my OH has just told me it is an ex girlfriends name!!!! Wtf! He tried to justify it saying it was a daft under 16 relationship but I'm still raging!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SoddingUnicorns · 10/07/2018 12:21

If it was a long term adult relationship I could see your point OP, but a teenage one?

Use the name, I think you’ve got overly upset and once you’ve calmed down you’ll see that.

gamerchick · 10/07/2018 12:19

Come on OP, go have a cuppa and take a breath. This is a none issue. At least it wasn't a favourite past dog or something.

pushpops · 10/07/2018 12:18

My DH vetoed every name he had a 'relationship' with. Fuck me, I'm surprised our kid has a name... all my favourites were a no.

I didn't care, and thought he was being ridiculous - it's not like you're going to look at your daughter and think of Dorris from 2003 who was a firecracker.

Go with Sophia if it bothers you too much.

NoCureForLove · 10/07/2018 12:17

You are ridiculous. How about "Ridiculous"? But I think you'd need a more ordinary middle name than "Furious".

Tom
Sam
John?

ICanOnlyLaugh · 10/07/2018 12:17

FURIOUS I'm not a fan of. But one of the DCs goes to school with a child whose name is the equivalent of Fantastic (deliberately not IDing the poor child on the internet!) which I think is much nicer.

Seriously OP, cuppa tea and a lie down. Brew

Beehiveyourself · 10/07/2018 12:13

My ex fiancé always liked a particular name, the name of a friend of ours who unfortunately died. It was “our name” for if we had a little boy.

Things didn’t work out. Ex married someone else, had a little boy and used the name! People kept asking me whether I was shocked. I wasn’t, it’s a name that he liked. However, about a year later his wife found out about the history of the name (ex told her I think) and she was FURIOUS. I sort of understand her reaction. The name came from a loved up time when he was with someone else.

But it still is a name he loved.

(I didn’t use it!)

Lobsterquadrille2 · 10/07/2018 11:38

Did he tell you because he's less keen on the name Sophie than you are, knew that you were hormonal and that it would put you off it?

Sophie was, some years ago, the most popular girls' name in the charts and it's been pretty popular for a long time. My best friend (48), my niece (32) and DDs friends (20) are all called Sophie so it's stood the test of time. If I loved it, I would use it and the association will very quickly be with your DD and nobody else.

MarthasGinYard · 10/07/2018 10:57

Bloody hell Grin

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 10/07/2018 10:56

Unless he is only 17, I don't see the issue

Ginger1982 · 10/07/2018 10:55

You're being ridiculous.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 10/07/2018 10:52

I would maybe feel this way if it had been a serious relationship, but a teenage relationship wouldn't have any impact on a baby name for me.

if you had your heart set on Sophie, use the name. If you don't you'll end up looking back in years to come and may regret not using the name you really wanted.

I struggled so badly to pick a name for DD there's no way I would have discounted a name I loved for something like this 😂

Cbeebiesrehab · 10/07/2018 10:51

If it’s taken him until now to make the connection then he obviously isn’t harbouring any lasting love for the girl.

Deep breath OP, if it’s upsetting you this much then pick another name.

HyenaHappy · 10/07/2018 10:50

What made said ^

flumpybear · 10/07/2018 10:49

If you call a child FURIOUS it'll need a '!' On the end of it

MadeForThis · 10/07/2018 10:48

Serious adult relationship then it makes sense.

Pre - 16?? That's your hormones talking.

Unless she's the one that got away

FASH84 · 10/07/2018 10:47

Erm, this is madness

PaddyF0dder · 10/07/2018 10:37

As the Scots would say, “away and boil your heid”.

SmileSweetly · 10/07/2018 10:36

I have a spare grip if you need it?

whiskeysourpuss · 10/07/2018 10:36

Are you 17 OP? Cause if not I don't see why this is an issue Hmm

Is he still in touch with her? Maybe she'd be open to changing her name to Hepsabelle so that you could still use Sophie...

MissMoodyMoo · 10/07/2018 10:36

It was him that made the big issue about it then tried to back track! I just wish he didn't tell me! I'm hormonal and had my heart set on Sophie 😭

Ducks in a row and LTB.

HappyLollipop · 10/07/2018 10:29

What exactly are you angry about? Sophie is an extremely popular name of course you were bound to come across a few it just so happens your DP went out with one as a teenager which is completely normal and he shouldn't be made to feel bad about things that happened way before you two met. but if it's that much of a deal breaker than pick another name there's plenty out there.

ShowOfHands · 10/07/2018 10:29

How dare SHE? Why do people always blame the OW? It's his fault. His life, his choices which led to this. At 14yrs old, he should have avoided relationships with girls called Sophie in case a girl he hadn't yet met wanted the name for a baby they hadn't yet conceived.

LTB.

SumAndSubstance · 10/07/2018 10:28

Are you raging because you can’t call your daughter after a teenage ex and he hadn’t told you, because he’s now saying he can’t call his daughter after a teenage ex or because he had a teenage ex? If it’s number 2, tell him not to be so ridiculous. If it’s 1 or 3, don’t be so ridiculous.

Beehiveyourself · 10/07/2018 10:28

Thesearmsofmine “Furious” totally works as a middle name lol!
