Daniyal or Laidan?

Hello, our baby boy is half Moroccan/English.

The final 2 names we like are Daniyal and Laidan. Which do you prefer and why?

Oh honestly.

I’ve taught a Daniyal. I never thought ooooo his mum’s gone for an odd spelling. I thought, oh that must be the Arabic spelling as he was mixed race. And I thought how nice to have a name that works in both cultures.

I teach in London where there’s so much diversity I, and the kids I teach, tend to be not judgemental about names!

So I love Daniyal op. Works in both cultures and Dan is a great nn.

Laidan is very close to Ladan, which is a reasonably common Persian female name.

I've met a couple of Moroccan guys called Mourad/Morad, which is a nice name.

In this country, Daniyal will look as though you don't know how to spell.
This. I'd assume it was a "yooneek" spelling of Daniel and the parents were idiots. He'll spend his entire life correcting people.

I wouldn’t go for Daniel - it sounds like I assume Daniyel is pronounced, but people in GB will know how to spell it, so it will cross the two cultures.

Apologies if I am wrong about the pronunciation.

I really like Zac.

Laidan looks a bit like Leiden (=suffer in German).

Is Danyial pronounced like denial?

Because it rhymes. Aidan is ok but I'm not keen on the others.

Laiden is a no. Too much like Jadon, Aiden, Kayden, Bradon, Hayden. Sounds like Laden.
Daniyal is ok but opt for the western spelling.
There are some really nice muslim/arab names and Idris works in the UK and Morocco.
Ilyas, Yusuf and Sulamein are also nice.

If it's a DB'ed surname then I would be inclined to go short, sweet and easy to spell, for example, Zac, Ben(i), Daniel, Raif, etc. This is from experience- DH is DB'ed, part of which is v uncommon, and I see people's eyes widen and think "shit, what did he say" when he introduces himself. He has a bog standard first name which is a blessing as they usually catch that much.

With regards to your choices to me it's better to either go all out with a Moroccan-with-a-capital-M name or pick something like those above that have a Moroccan feel but are well known in the UK (assuming that's where he's being brought up). Daniyal is a bit of a halfway house and, as this thread goes to show, is unfairly assumed to be a yoonique spelling of a popular name to many. He could be Daniel on the BC, Daniyal as an affectionate nn by the Moroccan side and Danny by everyone else once he gets to nursery. Laidan will probably get mistaken for Jayden/Cayden etc. which may or may not grate after a while.

I think pps realize the spelling isn't one the OP has made up but as it isn't the standard spelling the dc would have to correct the spelling a lot and others may well think it is a more made up spelling than it is.

Daniyal is really nice & it travels well too in its various spellings. I also like Laidan, it's a bit more unusual.

OP, please ignore the posters on here who don't seem to realise it's an actual Arabic name & not just a 'yooneek' spelling.

Irrelevant these days - my sister grew up never getting anything with her name. In the days of digital print she can have anything she wants.

I like Yasinne. I work with a Yaseen and no one struggles with it. He does get Yas or Yazzie.

We had this with my cousin, looking for a name that worked in both Arabic and English. The list i think was Idris, Barack, Sami, Zander and Zaki and maybe a few more I will try to remember.

I think with 'Laiden' there's a possibility of teasing as it has 'laid' in it, especially as his friends will probably call him Laid.
