Is Thomas boring?

Just that really. I've always like Thomas and i quite like Tom, though hate Tommy. But is Thomas boring?

DD has a rare name (given to 10 babies in total the year she was born) and I tend to prefer more uncommon names but keep coming back to Thomas

Yes, it’s incredibly vanilla. I went to school with a fair few in the nineties and it’s still common now. You could say that’s a good thing as its timeless but it’s far too common for my liking and I’m not one for yoo-nique names by any stretch.

I prefer Tom to Thomas, as it sounds to me a bit more "sturdy gardener who likes rugby" name than rather "stuffy, wears cravats, votes Tory" Thomas. That's just the ones I know though Grin

Personally in my area there are quite a few Thomas' from babies to adults

It's in the eye of the beholder. I'd say it's a classic name. Your baby your choice. Choose your favourite name or I'll bet you'll regret it. Smile

Dd has an unusual name and I went for Thomas for one of my twins, it was my dad's name and I've always loved it.

We have maybe just been lucky but haven't bumped into any others at school. I actually know more kids called Jaxon than Tom.

With pfb dd we really didn't want her to be be in a class with six others of the same name but with the boys we'd relaxed a bit and decided it was more important to have names we loved. Most importantly he (now 8) loves his name.

Yes I think so. If you've gone unusual for your dd it seems strange to pick a really common name for ds. I know five Thomas' under 3. I love unusual names. Perhaps tell us your dd name and we could suggest a few for ds.

Ds's name is in a similar vein and I did consider Thomas.

I love it - it's a name that is recognised but will stand out among all the Jensen's, Jackson's, Alfie's and Charlies in the class.

He won't have to spell it and it works as easily for a high court judge as a supermarket shelf stacker.

I have a girl with a very unusual name, but love Thomas for a boy. Go for it.

Overused ( there are 4 Toms in our class), dull and quite boring.

There are SO many other lovely classic names to choose from.

I think it’s a lovely name. My boys have names of a similar type - think William and Joseph - and both go by the short version (never the -y version).
They are classic and they both love their names.

I write for a living so names have to pass the byline test for me. Would you take a Times columnist with that name seriously?

Thomas - yes.
Indigo - lovely, but no.

Lovely and classic name, not one that will date. It also has a lovely meaning (the lord has added to the family).

It's very boring to me. But that's because I have about 5 cousins names Thomas and my partners brother is also Thomas. I also went to school with plenty of them. It must be a loved name for that reason, but I've never understood why!

Nothing wrong with a ‘boring’ name. Once it’s assigned to your Thomas/Tom it will be associated with whatever he wants to be, it’s a name that can be worn without any expectations or assumptions if that makes sense!

Safe but not boring. I like Thomas, Tom and Tommy. It's a classic name like James or Matthew.
