Traditional boys names that aren’t too old fashioned or common?

I like traditional names that are timeless so don’t necessarily sound like a grandpa but also aren’t majorly common like George or Thomas.

My favourite name is Sebastian but because DP went to school with one who was a bit of a twat, he has crossed it off. DP likes Raymond after his Grandad but I think it’s too old fashioned and does sound like a Grandpa name. I don’t mind Ray but he won’t have a shortened name.

The only other two names we sort of agree on are Casper and Albert but I’m not overly sold on either. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Oh no! Maybe ask him once you've been through the labour and hopefully he will be so in awe of you that he will be a bit more keen on some of the names you prefer 😬

DP’s name is one of the mentioned so that’s out. I like Patrick and Laurence but DP doesn’t. Tbh, he is just dead set on Raymond which I don’t like. At least I managed to move him past his Dad’s name (Geoffrey) though... sigh.

I love Arthur but that’s another DP isn’t keen on. Two of my great grandad’s were Louis and Stanley, both names I like but again DP doesn’t Sad. He is extremely frustrating!

I also love Edward and like the fact it can become Ted, Teddy or even Bear but again, DP isn’t keen.

Edgar is great! As an English lit graduate, I fully appreciate the literary link.

Just looking back through the lists you have all suggested and there a few I really like but DP doesn’t. He honestly doesn’t like many names at all... all we have managed to agree on is Albert and Casper but I don’t love either. He’s a bloody nightmare Grin.

My 18 month old is called Stanley. Traditional but not overly used. I'm expecting another boy in October and one of the 2 names we like for him is Sidney x

Edgar is lovely. I have a DN cwhose MN is Earnest and I am in hospital in the early stages of labour with a Stanley!

May I suggest Edgar? I have one. He's 5 months old. It probably IS a grandad's name but I don't care because I think it's fabulous. :) We were inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, but yesterday at baby group someone said for the first time: "oh Edgar, like in King Lear!" so there's the Shakespearean connection too.

We did similar to a previous poster and looked back a few generations so the name was both traditional and special for our family. Names we found of ancestors included Gordon, Arthur, Sidney, Fredrick, Patrick, Owen, Huw and Jack. We chose one of those.

We have 2 boys, Edward and Arthur.

Can you look into the family tree and go 2 or 3 generations back? That's what we did to get Edward and Arthur.
