North?

Ok so we are still coming up with names. We are in our 2nd trimester now so we've still got a while to finalize our choices.

A name we've found that we like too is North. Just to be clear, absolutely no connection to Kim Kardashian whatsoever. Can't personally stand her, but I really like the name and the nn 'Nori'.

Would love to hear your opinions if that's alright :)

@DwangelaForever that's such a shame! Clara is a beautiful name. It's an awful thing when your SO or parents don't like your baby names 😑. The worst is "it's ok". It's a stressful experience!

@DwangelaForever haha well I am a big Doctor Who fan I admit, but surprisingly no. I just like those names. The fact that they are in doctor who is just a bonus :)

@schnubbins ok, was there any need for that? Just say you don't like the name. If you bothered to read any of my previous posts on this thread, I am not naming our child North. The point if this thread was just to see what people thought of the name in general, but you can do that without being rude.

@Yutes That made me fangirl a little :) Finally someone on this thread has played it/seen the game! I pay very minimal attention to the Kardashians as well. For example I know of them, I know a few things about them, but I don't watch any of their shows, read about any of their "news" etc. Just that I know her daughter is called North.

Again, guys it's not on the top of our list. Was just curious of your thoughts on the name.

Love the name Xavier so don’t agree with your example there. However I agree with your other name being awful.

I know a guy called north, I don't think I'd immediately associate it with Kardashian because I don't really follow that sort of thing

I wouldn't think of the Kardashian's but that's probably down to age and complete lack of interest in so-called ' celebrities ' (whenever I hear the word it makes me think of Cardassians ... grey and a bit scaly). So, for me 'North' just sounds daft as a name - it's a direction or a region (maligned as 'grim oop North...') - I suspect this is the association which will stand the test of time.

But the other names on your list are all pleasant and objectionable.

Btw I know that 'Conor' is the Irish spelling of the given name, but 'Conner' is the Scottish spelling of the given name. (I'm Scottish).

Nori isn't terrible, but not keen on North and I would definitely associate it with the Kardashian's.

Another poster misspelling Conor as a first name. Cora, Clara, Sam and Leo are fine. Just stay away from celebs OP.

Only in this country are names with cultural heritage attached - from your examples - Ancient Greek and French/Spanish - considered ‘posh’.

Xavier is quite common name in France and Spain.

How can it be no connection to the Kardashians? North/Nori West is the original North I’d have thought? It’s entirely to do with the Kardashians I’d say.

I agree Nori is cute and personally once someone is named an unusual name there is only one initial eyebrow-raise and then it’s just accepted. So from that point of view I see no issue with the name... but to deny the Kardashian connection is crazy!

@YouKnowWhatIMean Detroit become human. It's a game if you're not into gaming or haven't seen anyone play it. I'm into gaming however and it just kind of stick with me.

Names can be pretty labelling OP

I was not aware of the Kardashian connection before this thread (thank you MN for opening my eyes) but North did make me splutter. After all why not East or West or South? Or North North West?

Even if points of the compass are going to be a new naming trend they will be very telling of your children's origins. And for me a name should be something that they can take with them wherever they go without anyone instantly associating them with something. Makes people look at the person for themselves IYSWIM

I suggest you don't name your child until you meet your child. I was completely set on Marcus which is a family name until I met DS. And then I realised that something so patrician would never be right for him. He was a gurgling inclusive bunch of fun and he could never have been called Marcus.

Wait until you meet your DC. It'll come to you then.
