Help us choose a boy name please!

Hello! We still do not knoe the gender of our baby. I always thought that i would want to knoe out of practicality but we both agreed that we want to wait until they are born. Only problem is we can't seem to find any boy names that we both like. Our list currently consists of just 3 names -

Leo/Leonardo? "Leo" doesn't seem complete.

Connor - This is currently our favourite atm. I don't know how common it is, but we really don't care about that anyway.

Sam/Samuel? I just think it's a nice name. We have far more girl names than boys names. No reason why tbh.

Anyway we would really appreciate your opinions on our names and which ones you like in order of preference, especially Connor. Thank you! :)

"Popular names" aren't really an issue for me. It also does depend where you are/ what region you're in too. I've met one Connor, and no Sams or Leos.

I will still be going with Connor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Conor, but I really just prefer it with the two n spelling. It's just a personal preference and they are both valid, the same with a post I made a little while ago about Hailey/Hayley. Hailey just looks better to me. Haley was my original spelling but people kept mispronouncing it as Hallie. So please keep that in mind and not try to "correct" me. There is a difference between your opinion (which obviously is the point of this post), and just nitpicking over an equally valid spelling.

Connor

Samuel and Leo are popular though, I know a couple of each but much nicer than Connor. If you have to go with Conor the one ‘n’ spelling is much nicer.

Samuel is pretty boring and very popular.

That is pretty much what my sister told me when I named DS Samuel, but in his 10 years, I have met far more Leo/Leonardos and Con(n)ors than Sam/Samuels.

Also agree with it being dated. My mum was a primary school teacher and she always says that Conor was a ‘naughty boy’ name.
However DH has a cousin called Connor who is 20 and absolutely lovely and everything you would ever want your teenage boy to be. He wasn’t a ‘naughty boy’ either.

Samuel is by far my favourite - lovely traditional name that’s surprisingly not very common
Leo is getting too common for me

I'm not so sure about Leonard. I think I would just go with Leo before Leonard.

@AtticaRose I actually knew that! It must have slipped my memory obviously though. That does make me feel better, since o do prefer just Leo on it's own.

@JessambardKingdomBrunel didn't know that teachers thought that 😂. I'm Scottish and my fiance is American but we are moving to Canada soon (we move around but we're looking to settle down once the baby comes). I used to be so infatuated with Leonardo DiCaprio, but that's not the reason I like the name (at least not the only one lol) :)

Leo/Leonardo - love Leo. If you want a full name though, I'd go with Leonard instead of Leonardo. Leonardo is rather too try-hard and pretentious. I'd also think you were massive DiCaprio fans.

Connor - Very chavvy, a naughty boy name. Teachers have a negative first impression when they see they have a Connor in their class.

Sam/Samuel? - love Samuel. So classy and professional, and will suit him as a baby, as a teen, as an adult, a professional and an old man.

Order of preference:

  1. Samuel
  2. Leo
........... ........... 1,000,000. Connor

Leo. Great name.

Sam is a good sensible name.

Connor/Conor. Taught a fair few, we’re all ‘tricky’. Seemed an interesting coincidence.

That’s because you’re used to seeing the surname Connor. Conor is the correct spelling of the Irish first name. If you’re going to access Irish culture it’s better to get it right in the U.K. Only in the US is the first name spelt with two ns.

Leo is the Latin word for lion! So it is a full word/name in its own right, it's not a shortening of another name (unless you want it to be).

I get that Leonardo might sound a little strange? In the UK, but idk I just don't know if Leo on it's own sounds "right" iykwim.

Leo/Leonardo? - Just Leo. Leonardo sounds a bit ridiculous.

Connor - Conor was very popular in the UK about 20 years ago. Dated.

Sam/Samuel? - I'd go with Samuel. I know 3 adult male Sams.

All three are nice but Connor seems dated in the UK. I'd probably go for Leo. Baby might look more like a Sam though.
I know one adult Leo in his 40s and he is just Leo.

Sam/Samuel -in the 10 years I have had one, we have met surprisingly few. I like that it is a name you can’t make any assumptions about age etc.

I considered Isambard as a long version (I am a civil engineer) but DH was not brave enough.

Connor is lovely
I don't like Leonardo - reminds me of teenage mutant ninja turtles. I do like Leonard though.
Samuel is classic and I quite like it.
