What are your thoughts on Eugene for a boy?

Yes I have a really strong dislike for it too! It's quite a uniquely horrible sound, I think because the beginning is likesomeone saying 'eugh', then the depressing 'een' ending that was discussed on another thread the other day- see Maureen, Doreen etc.

Joeybee · 29/06/2018 10:23

Love it. A lot of 'old man' names are coming back into style. Eugene sounds sweet and kind, but also Gene/Genie could be a really cool nickname too, a gene sounds a bit more edgey

foxtiger · 29/06/2018 08:24

The only one I've ever met was very prematurely middle-aged and stuffy, so I can't picture it on a small child somehow. Sad, as it's got a nice meaning.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/06/2018 18:12

Reminds me of Eugene Wrayburn in Our Mutual Friend - one of my favourite characters. So in theory I like it but in reality not that keen...

letsallhaveanap · 23/06/2018 18:10

This is one of the only names I actually really dislike... Im not sure why, but its just my personal taste... I mean it is a traditional name and if you like it I think you should use it!

mzsink · 23/06/2018 18:07

Makes me think of a spotty geek

TroysMammy · 23/06/2018 18:06

I know a Eugene in his early 50's. Nothing like PP's ideas of what a Eugene would look like. He's quite dishy, intelligent, excellent company and he was once my fwb.

maamalady · 23/06/2018 15:24

It's better than Eustace.

Flamingosnbears · 23/06/2018 14:01

Eugene is just lovely, seldom heard now brings to mind golden era Hollywood

QuickWash · 23/06/2018 12:08

One of the worst men I have ever worked with was called Eugene - he was sexist and rude - and I've never met any others so it's a no from me I'm afraid!

ElizabethLemon · 23/06/2018 10:37

I like it 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Awful.

needmorespace · 23/06/2018 09:49

i really like it but also really like Eoghan

Paranoixia · 23/06/2018 07:21

Absolutely hideous. Do you want your child to hate you?

It makes me think of that "Eugene" who auditioned for Britain's got Talent.

DiegoMadonna · 23/06/2018 01:14

One of the most horrible names I can think of, actually.

Apologies to any Eugenes out there.

Raven88 · 23/06/2018 00:04

There are a lot of memes about the name Eugene so I always think of them.

musicinthe00ssucks · 22/06/2018 23:59

Awful. It also reminds me of Grease

Picknickers · 22/06/2018 23:54

I like it.

TheLocalYokel · 22/06/2018 23:34

Any Irish connections? Eoghan (pronounced like Owen) is lovely.

RedDwarves · 22/06/2018 23:27

I love Gene (Gene Kelly is a brilliant namesake), but am not a big fan of Eugene.

Bouncingbelle · 22/06/2018 22:37

Awful

daisypond · 22/06/2018 20:51

It's a difficult one to pull off. I wouldn't go there. Egon is a related form, more common in central Europe. I think that's better.

RaininSummer · 22/06/2018 20:38

Not keen. Makes me think of Floyd's Careful with that axe Eugene.

MikeUniformMike · 22/06/2018 20:36

Awful. Owen has a similar meaning, much more normal sounding.
