Can we use this as a stand alone name?

Fred.
Love Fred, don’t really like Alfred, Wilfred or Fredrick. Can we just use Fred on it’s own or do you think it’s a bit nicknamey and unsubstantiatal?

Yes, it's fine.

I know a couple of Freds. Neither are actually called Fred or any variation. It's just nicknames that they use that have stuck.

Fred is just fine on it’s own.

I think it can also be a diminutive of Edward, in case that’s considerable? (My great uncle was Edward, known as Fred)...

I think it is a bit nicknamey, but that’s just me, plenty do use Fred by itself. I know a Freddie whose name is actually Freddie, not a nickname.

Fred is fine.
Dc have friends who are simply Fred.
